My Ol'Man flew eight sorties in two days over the Ia Drang Valley in an A-1 Skyraider. The troops on the ground appreciated it.

RIP CSM. I'm sure you're already tearing up boots on fiddlers green.

My dad served with the 101st in Vietnam in 66/67. Even though the Division at that point was no longer "Airborne" in the sense of being delivered into combat by parachute (though, there may have been units attached that were), there were still a lot of Airborne qualified soldiers serving there. My dad met quite a few old timers who had made combat jumps in WWII with one of the Airborne units.

He said the portrayal of CSM Plumley in We Were Soldiers by Sam Elliot was very realistic. Especially the early scenes with the young Sgt. wishing him a good morning. My dad and the other young NCOs looked at these guys like giants walking the earth.
