    Very tragic.

Our firearms instructor and I took some of our agency's old issued Smith mod66's out to the range a few weeks ago. He had the hammer cocked back without realizing it, and attempted to open the cylinder latch. The gun fired a .357mag round downrange!

Obviously the gun had been home-gunsmithed at some point and has a push off issue, but luckily it was pointed downrange at the time. Honestly though my guess is it was ND, but I was right next to him watching, because empty brass was sticking in the chamber so we were testing the gun out. I was not able to re-create the AD.

The rules are there for a reason. This is a tragic situation, and I feel as badly for the instructor as I do the family of the fallen officer.

We were trying to find a decent revolver to send with the guys going to the firearms instructor certification.

What is a push off issue?

In the video, the reporter claims the instructor was having a conversation with her. He say to her, "it could happen this fast", and then pulled his weapon and shot her.

    Just bizarre...

That's why any class related to firearms of any kind must require an officer to unload and lock the slide back prior to entering the room. All live ammo stays outside the classroom. No exceptions.

Then, each weapon is checked for safety by TWO staff (not counting the officer).

Better yet, don't take the real weapons into the firearms classroom unless they are absolutely necessary.

absolutely no excuse, sounds to me more like Negligent homicide instead of "accident".

Damned shame. Agreed there's absolutely no excuse for this.

Damaged or tampered with internal lockwork where the hammer can fall without the trigger being pulled.

Tragic indeed. That's why they make those rubber training guns.

This girl was attending my college, and all my professors knew her. She was a very great person, and very smart. Very sad.
