pre series 80 Colt Lightweight Commander;

Discussion in '1911 Forums' started by babarracing, Dec 7, 2010.

  1. Do any of you guys have a few suggestions where I could go to get a pre 80 series Lightweight Commander? Carry gun would be great. Don't need Safe Queen. Just very well maintained mechanical condition. Very grateful for any input. Know any guys who wanna/need to sell one?:wavey:

There's currently a couple on gunbroker--one at $900 (buy now) and the other starting at $750. A bunch of Clapp LW Commanders which are aluminum frame, no fp safety, but brand new. They're in the $1300+ range. Either they're not any good, or guys bought them and are trying to flip 'em for a quick hundy profit.

To the vigilant goes the prize.

Be patient, watch GB and the forums and google for them often.

And don't dilly dally around, act quickly when you find one.

I've shopped for about six months looking for the same. Like doc said, be vigilant and act quickly. You're going to pay for it - they aren't cheap so don't wait for a "cheap" one. Get one that's in great shape and act quickly.

  5. i'm slowly falling in love with gunbroker.

  6. Thanks for the in put guys! Dallying is what I do best though.:whistling:

I found one almost unfired once for under 600. I bought it and have carried it every day since.

Thought it was Sarge43 when I glanced at it. He snagged a Bill Wilson Carry from a dude after he bought it brand new and only ran a few mags through it and hated it. He got it on the spot for like $1,800. Ridiculous deal.

I paid $550 for mine and it had been sitting in the pawnshop for a couple of months.

The older LW Commanders are also my preferred medicine. Last bought one a few years ago from a guy a reasonable drive from me. Found it at Gunsamerica. $700, in good condition, no mods.
They've gone up since then. Also seems like too many folks feel the need to mod em' rather than buy a newer model with the features they want. Its a shame, IMHO.
    Good luck on your search.

They show up online pretty regularly in the $700-$900 range.

I went through three of them before I settled on my current Combat Commander in 9mm for IDPA and range shooting. (heavier frame for better durability)

Last nice Colt I bought was a 1977 Gold Cup with box and everything.

I found it by just searching with Google, and it was in a local classified ad in Alabama.

You look hard enough and often enough you'll find a LW Commander.

Currently there's a gun store in Houston with nearly a dozen Commanders in stock. Their prices are at the high end of the market, but that's where I'd start if I had some for sale.

    Haven't dealt with them personally.

    good luck!

As others have stated, Gunbroker, GunsAmerica, and Auction Arms are the places to look. The Louder Than Words forum is a good place also. I picked-up a minty 1951 Commander there at a good price. The sellers on that forum are generally long-time members of that forum and are very reputable.

Spend the extra money to get one in mint or near mint condition, it will save you money and trouble in the long run.

    HTH,
    John
