I have a line on a pre-ban Colt AR NIB through my father-in-law. What sort of concerns should I have about buying this? I really like the 6920 (it being a blank slate, well made, and I can put all of the add on's I like on it). Will a model like this give me the flexibility to add sights, etc? Or will I need to have modifications done?

Also, how much should something like this cost?

Pre-Ban 20in A2 style should run about 900 to 1100 depends on location and condition. In todays crazy market more would not surprise me.

Mine has a regular handle (non-removable) and full stock, and I put a traditional colt scope 4x20 on it. Very accurate and has a see-thru base for irons.

Great gun, no mods needed. If it has a high round count you you will need a new barrel someday. Not cheap now. Paid too much for mine, but it is really colt, so it is a premium cost item (because of demand).

Check all the major parts (receiver, barrel, hand guards, lower, front site and rear) for roll marks. Should be C or CM to be a real Colt. I bought a "Colt SP1" recently for $700 that had a bubba barrel, but everything else was original colt. New barrel was $150 two months ago, more now. Got it before the rush cheap. Worth $1000 to 1200 now.

Other here know much more than me. I would be interested in what they say.

Ok. Was just looking to see if this could be a cheaper option. Seems to me the savings (if any) don't justify the sacrifices.

    Thanks for the help fella's!

I really don't see the appeal of 'pre ban' Colts now that most of us can just go get a brand new one at Walmart, without the inflated price, non spec pins and cut off bolt carriers.

Pre bans are a part of history.....the 1/7 twist + the 20 inch barrel makes for an outstandingly accurate rifle.. The one negative is mounting the scope on the carry handle, gives it a very high profile, but still very accurate. If you can find one for $1200.00 bucks it would be a good buy as they run much higher in different areas of the country and now all AR will carry at least a 20% premium. Most are into the 16 inch barrel carbines with mulp rails, gadgits and removable handles. None are as accurate as that 20 inch 1/7 twist though. So ask yourself just what you really want and move towards that end.

I like my 20" 1/7 Bravo Co. A4 upper but I didn't pay anywhere near $1200-$1700, instead I assembled a lower with an A2 stock and had less than $750 in the whole rifle.

Now if Colt would make a semi-auto 20" A2 available (with a threaded barrel, actual flash supressor, bayonet lug, and spec size pins) I would probably buy one.

I have one (6500), A2 upper, 20" barrel, 1/7" twist. Very accurate. Weighs a bit (8 lb) and the only adjustable stock you can install is the Magpul UBR (~$250).

    Here is mine:

I like mine. I would also very much like to get a BCM 16" Mid Length, Light Weight rifle. I would equip it with all Magpul MOE furniture like this one. Unfortunately BCM is really backed up.

  18. Some people get into the ban markings (military and police only) that were applied during the ban. The pre-ban stuff sat a while in some cases and were sold after the ban expired.

I think they are all fine and I would get the one with the best deal for what you want.
