whats a good powder to use in both so I don't have to buy 2 different kinds...
Power pistol would be my choice.... you'll want full power loads for the 10mm and .40 would be my guess for comparison.
If you are trying to max performance in both, go medium slow burners like Longshot, AA#7 or BlueDot. Something like WSF will work perfectly in the 40 & give you good midrange loads in the 10. Anything faster than Unique is just not gonna do it in the 10mm for anything but light-midrange loads.
Win 231 for powder puff loads.
WSf and power pistol for everyday loads.
Longshot for the top end.
I want full power out of them both....if its there I want it...
if you check the 10mm reloading forums there is a guy forgot his name buffalobill or something was putting 8.8 grains of wsf in his 10mm but noticed primer flattening idk seems crazy
Power Pistol and Longshot.... there you go...
You had better be careful with the 40. Pushing to far with it can be problematic.
That is why I said WSF for midrange 10mm loads. It hits the pressure wall before you reach top vel. Stick w/ the powders I roignally mentioned, all will get max performance out of either caliber.
I load longshot in my 40s,pretty clean nice power, excellent accuracy even with min loads
Thanks I`m going to look into some of ya`ll suggestions.
I use Longshot for my 10mm loads. Very accurate, excellent velocity. I use 200 grain bullets only in the 10mm.
Power Pistol over #7.
But they are both good.
WSF for both would be my choice. You can safely get good power and still have a smile on your face.
Another powder that is not overly popular is True Blue, and it would also work very well for both, and is an interesting 10mm powder:
There are many out there, but if I was choosing one powder for both calibers as I once did, it would be WSF, which I did. WSF also makes some fantastic full power 9mm loads if you ever get a conversion barrel for one of your glocks or already have a 9mm.
Just my $0.02, I am no where near as experienced here as many others, but have learned a lot on this website and from a few members in particular.
Edited to add: I love the way WSF meters in my 550B, very consistent, one of the most if not the most consistent powders in my Dillon of all the powders I have used so far.
Clays is my favorite powder for the 40.
I use Clays for 40, I have not started reloading 10mm.
Clays is waaay to scary for anything but those pesky bunnyfart loads in either round IMO. You can barely get to factory vel in the 45acp before reaching max pressure, even in 9mm it gets spooky near the top end. Nope, no way in the 40 or 10mm.
If you want full power loads then Longshot will get you there. It will also get your attention in a hurry. I also like #7, but if I had to pick One powder for both the 10 & 40 it would be Ramshot Silhouette. Accurate, clean and plenty of velocity.
All are excellent choices.
The biggest drawback to upper end Longshot loads is whatever bullet is used, including Gold Dot, tend to blow-up at close range in 10mm.
If I were to pick one powder for both calibers, including night shooting, it would be AA #7 for personal defense. For hunting with a 180gr XTP/10mm at longer distances, I'd load Longshot.
