My dad wants to get his first pistol to go shooting with me. My problem is I don't know much about other guns aside from Glocks and Springfields in terms of reliability and whatnot.

He wants a 9mm and doesn't want to spend much more than $400. He probably won't shoot it a ton, just wants to go with me every now and then. I went to a gun show today but didn't really see any good deals.

Got an email from CDNN this week that had sales on Barettas. I got a PX4 Compact in 9mm. It was $439 plus shipping and a $25 transfer fee from my FFL. It comes with 2 magazines and 3 backstraps. They had 92Fs, Nanos, and other PX4s. The Nanos were just under $400.

I'd go with a Sig Sauer SP2022 (SigPro). I believe you can still get them from Palmetto State Armory for under $400.
  4. If you come up to Freeland, I have a Glock 26, G35, and XD .357 you could handle. There are tons of used guns that are every bit as good as new, as long as you don't mind being the second person to pull the trigger.

400 bucks bought me a 9mm RIA 1911 used. (with another 100 for magazines).

Also look around slickguns. It's a deal sharing website.

Why not go by a range that rents them and let him try several different brands and models? Then he can decide which one he likes best.

You stole my answer. Saw someone at the range with one today. Nice looking gun.

Maybe something like a 5906. Or sometimes a used Glock 17 or Glock 19 shows up at 400 or less. One of the tables today had Ruger SR9s and SR40s at 399 and sometimes a used Ruger pistol can be noticeably less than this.

That's the plan, but I need to know what brands to gravitate toward and not have him find out he really likes a gun that turns out to be unreliable or something. I have no idea about the track records of Smith and Wesson, Kel-Tec, Ruger, Taurus, Sig Sauer etc. I want to go there with a few brands in mind and have him try them.

I'll check out some of the suggestions above, thanks.

At the risk of alienating lots of people I would guess that statistically the Taurus might be more prone to have issues than others (no offense to those of you who have a Taurus that has been problem free through 200,000 hot rounds and more accurate than your 2800 dollar gun is.) And in my limited experience with them and from what I have read here, some of the Kel-Tec offerings are not especially enjoyable to shoot for extended range sessions because of the weight and size.

    Sig 2022, Ruger SR9, Springfield XD9, Stoeger Cougar 9x19.

Reigning champs of the ~400 division! :)

I would plan on having about $450-$500 bucks.

    Things that spring to mind...

    New Sig 2022
    Used Springfield XD
    Used Glock 19 or 17
3rd Gen Smith and Wesson like 5906 or 6906 [check CDNN]
I think for a little more you can probably get a used or police trade SIG 226.
    Possibly a SIG 225 / P6.
RIA or ATI 9mm 1911 style.
    Smith and Wesson SIGMA
    Smith and Wesson SD9
Ruger P95 (hat tip to Tim151515)

If you can spring a little more cash you can get a Walther PPQ 9mm for less than $550. It's one heck of a fun 9mm range pistol.

another option would be a p95. 300 bucks and is a great gun. built like a tank and accurate. goes bang every and my dad both shoot it better than his 90-two, a 600 dollar gun.

My vote would be a P95, best 300 bucks I've ever spent. To bad like a idiot I got rid of it.

Another vote for a Ruger P series or even the SR9.
THE Arcus 94 merits consideration too, takes BHP mags.

I bought my dad a CZ-82 for his birthday a few years ago. He has since bought several guns on his own! CZ-82s are right around $200 and shoot the VERY potent 9X18 Makarov round.

    GREAT GUNS....I have three myself:wavey:

Also, a Ruger P-89 is a good buy if you can find one used. I $250 I ever spent on a handgun!!!!!

    Good luck and good shooting:thumbsup:

    How about this:

Beretta 92 or M9. Spend a little more for one of the best 9mm's out there.
