In light of recent events I have been looking over my survival supplies and making sure there are no gaps. Well I found one. Pet Food. I have two 100 pound labradors that are my "kids." I usually have one or two 50# bags of dry kibble.(usually, but not always.) I was thinking of filling 5 gallon buckets with the kibble and storing it. I would change it out just like all the other supplies......however....is there a better way that it could be stored for longer term....? I cant see using roll after roll of vacume bags on kibble. Any ideas? Has this topic been covered before? Maybe Ill have to start stocking up on canned dog food for SHTF.

Thanks fellas, Im sure my "kids" would appreciate it

Some folks do buy and store dog and cat food in bulk--in 5-gallon buckets using oxygen absorbers to extend the shelf life.

Of course dogs are carnivores by nature (and so are cats). They can survive for a while on an omnivorous diet, however, in the end--they need meat, and left to their own resources, they will find that meat either on their own, or more likely in a pack of other local dogs (or cats).

You can get into quite a philosophical discussion about pets in a disaster scenario. I don't want to open that can of worms myself. If you love your pets, then you probably ought to be prepping in some way to provide for them just as you are for your family.

Yes--use mylar bags in those food-grade buckets. Vacuum-seal the bags (and use the Oxygen Absorbers as well).
