I've been looking for a reliable open top mag pouch for duty use. I've had safariland and now blade-tech, but they are the equivalent of cup holders. I expected the retension to be a little tighter, even with the screws as tight as they'll go, I'm still not satisfied. Other than going to closed top, anybody have any suggestions.

Samething Cochese suggested, just double instead of triples is what I use. Love it.

I'll have to give it to safariland... always making the wheel rounder.
I had the "old" style where the two mags lay flat. I looked on cop quest, they are pretty reasonable. I'll have enough gear soon to make another complete belt, I just wish a could make another me.

To clarify, I have the x3 1911 setup.

Not too heavy or too wide. I don't think three 17 round mags would bother me too much either, as long as they weren't too close to 12/1 o'clock.

I wear mine at 2:30 (lefty) and they are perfect.

I have three different 775s...1911, double stack 9/40, and double stack 45. All work just fine. They would be my choice in open top, with the double being sound as well. With the 1911, the triple is narrower than my old UM quad carrier. The Bianchi open tops are good, too, if you prefer the more "traditional" orientation.

How wide is your 775 for the 1911? I looking for a pouch that carries more than two P220 mags, but is still compact.

Wouldn't there be some retention issues with an open top carrier? I've never used one, we have to use the snap kind.

I have had none with my Safariland 75 for either my G22, or P220. The magazines will not come out unless you draw them.

I might add, once you go open top, you don't go back. Unless its a CALEA mandate.

Seriously, with a conventional flapped mag pouch when drawing a magazine out, you unsnap the flap. Then the flap flops back down into the way, and hinders getting the mag out. Then, you brush the flap aside, and (finally) draw it out.

With the open top, you grab it and go. All gross motor skills.

The 775 measures approximately 4.00" wide while the G21 double pouch that I had laying around measured 4.25". I'm running three ten round mags as my spares plus an eight rounder in the gun. This way I only gave up two rounds from the quad pouch and got a better pouch out of it, anyway.

My experience was the same as Raz. I've never lost a mag.

I have the double for both my nylon and basketweave belt. Glock 22 magazines. love it. Every once and a while I have to tighten them down but they work great.

I have a double from Taurus for the 1911 that holds my Delta 10mm mags just fine. I have been nearly turned upside down and they haven't slipped yet in about 2 years.

Does the 'Nylon look" on the Safariland carrier actually look like nylon or can you tell its not?
Thanks for posting these up guys! I currently use the bianchi open top, and it holds them in there just not as tight as I'd like.
