My son has an interview today in the H-town Medical District. Sadistically, the interview ends at 5:00 PM, apparently precisely 5:00 PM. Kiddo is headed back to Dallas afterwards.

    Should he:

    A. Nut up and simply hit the road at 5:00?
    B. Sit tight, eat dinner and maybe hit the road at 6:30? He just turned 20 so having a beer is a no go.

    Thx.

ETA - weather decent as well?

Go eat a leisurely supper before hitting the traffic. Just West of the Medical Center going along Holcombe, he'll come to a major North/ South street named Kirby. Turn right (north) and there are several miles to choose a casual restaurant. Continue North on Kirby to Interstate 10, get on it heading East and follow the signs to I 45 North and Dallas.

My rule about rush hour is don't go out in it unless you absolutely have to do it.

So unless he has to be somewhere afterwards tell him to find someplace to chill.

Goode Company. The seafood, barbecue, and taqueria restaurants are all there just south of the freeway at Kirby and Westpark.

If he likes sushi, Azuma is pretty decent, a couple of blocks further south.

Oh, and the original Carraba's (not a chain place!) is just on the other side of the freeway south of Alabama.

In that case, hit up that Carraba's--still run by the family, not by whatever chain restaurant franchise they licensed their name to--or, a bit higher dollar but worth every penny, check out Prego's in the Village. It's about a mile south of the freeway, just off of Kirby (take a right at University).

When given the option of sitting in traffic or sitting in a good restaurant.....I'll choose the eats every time.

I hate rush hour traffic more than the average guy/gal so for me, it's a no-brainer.

We have a Prego's about 3/4 of a mile from my house. I like it a lot.

    I'll recommend Carraba's.

  12. If he is worrying about 5PM traffic after the interview, how is he planning to get home every day if gets that job? :dunno:

It's a medical school interview. If he ends up going there he will rarely ever have consider driving across Houston at 5:00 and then 250 plus miles to Dallas. It's a one off situation.

I would wait it out, especially being Friday. There are too many restaurants for me to recommend so with his smart phone, he can decide on his own. I, personally, would hit Niko Niko's for some Greek food there on Montrose. Great gyros!!!

    I second "wait it out"

Hit any main road headed west and hit Kirby (like everyone else has said as well) and some of the best places to eat in houston...again, as everyone else has said.

5 in Houston is a glorious drive ruined. Eat SLoooooooow....because it lasts a while.

The best is stop for an hr at the Holocaust Museum with free admission north of the Medical Center near the Children's museum. The place is cool inside but no CHL allowed .
Then proceed to Kirby and eat out at Goode's BBQ. Then hit the HWy 59 to I 45. Watch out for road ragers.

I just sent him a text about the Holocaust Museum. He's really bright but somewhat cloistered culturally. Ironically his girlfriend is Jewish.

Good call and thanks. Crap I need to go next time I'm down there.

We have a Torchy's near the house here in Dallas as well. He's eaten there dozens of times. Awesome food for sure.
