Make money prepping! ...only catch, you have to live on an AmeriCorps stipend...

"The White House has announced a new partnership between the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) that will establish a FEMA-devoted unit of 1,600 service corps members within the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corp (NCCC) solely devoted to disaster preparedness, response and recovery..."

"Cecilia Muñoz, director of the White House Domestic Policy Council, added that FEMA Corps “helps communities recover. It trains young people, helps them pay for college, and it doesn’t cost taxpayers an additional dime... this is a program you can be proud of. This is really government at its best.”

Obama increasing the size of government?

    Say it isn't so...

"Won't cost the taxpayer an additional dime?"

You are creating 1600 new jobs...which you are recruiting from existing government workers, right?

Think they won't refill those old positions?

"This is really government at its best?"

If this is true...we are screwed.

I read the stipend is around $1K per month... so, $12K per year. Reports from AmeriCorps hires are that they eat lots of top ramen and stay in overcrowded apartments to get by.

I don't know if they're recruiting from existing government drones or not (I'd guess not, since your average gubbermint employee is doing much better than the private sector), but you can bet that the 1600 number will get added to some phoney baloney jobs report and be touted as evidence of how Obama has "saved the economy" by adding jobs.

Jobs that are not even competitive to McDonald's in pay. But the media would never look into the type of job created...under Obama, at least.

I remember the media was very interested in the quality of jobs created under Bush, and he was regularly mocked for creating "burger flipper jobs." I'm certain Obie will get nothing but praise for "creating" even more miserable jobs.

1600 completely legal, low level, domestic open source intelligence collectors...

Primarily assigned to population centers...vice rural areas.

Plugged into every state/local emergency response & political network...

Compiling lists: Who is who...who has what...who is a player...who is not.

All the while monitoring the social and political temperature.

    Baby Steps.

They're recruiting kids aged 18-24, and 'service' begins in August:

Also, its not just 1,600 new members. That is just the beginning, from the FAQ:

I admit, this does worry me.

Whenever I bring this up (the tracking of preppers), I'm mocked for being a tinfoil-hat, and told "no way does the government have the capacity or interest to track preppers." To wit:

Macro to Micro. Macro first. After the program matures...there will be an interest in "micro".

As in every organization, they start out as interns. Later they become full time civil servants...and eventually management. Working in Intel/Crisis Management Fusion Centers across the USA...shoulder to shoulder with FEMA, Nat Guard, LEO, Federal LEO, etc.

Some will evolve to be True Believers in the Nanny State.

Whoa, whoa, hang on there. From what I've learned watching the media, objective or empirical questions like this, regarding the president's promises or performance, are racist.

You can't ask questions like that, of this Man:
