Do I need to stop all operating programs shown in the sys tray to correctly install a program such as printer software with a new printer ?

    Thanks,Dyno

I generally close all active windows but I do not close everything in the task tray. It doesn't seem to bother what I do. I don't know if that is the correct answer or not. Usually programs will tell you to close everything.

At the minimum, disable all AV scanners and their resident protection, and also any spyware scanners.

I shut down most everything and reboot after the install finishes to start them again.

With XP, though, it pays hugely to always create a Restore Point before adding anything to the system. So I always do.

    fastvfr,
Good advice, however, some things on the task bar for example like volume control, win messenger and an icon that says "safely remove hardware" that when right clicked don't give the option to disable.

It is these things I'm not sure of, the av disable and the like I can figure out.

Can you recomend a good problem solving reference book for win XP HE ?

    Thanks for the Help, Dyno
