I found a Federal white box load at my LGS today, $15 and change for a box of 50. I've never seen it before, but it's a great price. It's load number RT40180. All told, it looks like Federal has 3 FMJ loads and I'm interested in the comparative ballistics, out of curiosity mostly:

AE40R1 American Eagle. They list this on their website at 1000 fps and 400 ft lbs at the muzzle.

WM5223 is another 180 gr FMJ load. It may be the Champion brand and the webiste lists it at 984 fps and 388 ft lbs.

RT40180 is the new one. It looks not much different than American Eagle, except it doesn't have the decorative marks between the 'Federal' stamp and the '40 S&W' on the bottom of the brass.

Anyway, any info on this would be appreciated. Is it an overrun (like XM40HC)? Something new, and here to stay, or passing in the night? It's an awesome price and I'll pick up at least a few more boxes.

The RT40180 is Federal's new Range & Target ammo. Just another FMJ plinking load in a generic white box, just like Federal's new Estate Cartridge FMJ loads.

I bought a chunk of the .45 for a good price a while back. It shoots good, not too smokey and pretty clean.

I had not taken hardball seriously until someone told me there are times you may need it -- if your hollowpoints aren't getting through barriers -- so now I try to have at least one mag full of FMJ.

Just like LE does... oh wait. Hmm, maybe it's not such a good idea?
