I picked up a sporterized Mauser 8mm this weekend at the local gun show.

It came with a mount and rings for a scope but not the scope itself.

I know next to nothing about scopes. I've always used iron sites but I'd like to scope this one.

Any recommendations on an inexpensive scope? Say less than $200?

Also can I use the rings that are on the scope? Or do they have to match whatever scope I would purchase? Like I say I'm a newby with scopes
  2. You would have to measure the height of your mount and rings and
see how much clearance you have. I doubt you could use a 50mm
lens, more likely a 40mm or perhaps even a 30mm depending on what
    magnification you are wanting.
I would go with at least a Bushnell or Nikon quality scope. I personally
use Leupolds, but a VX-ll would get closer to $300 new.
The VX-l models run from about $190-$230 range.

I just measured from top of barrel to center of rings and I get almost exactly 1" or 25.4 mm

    So a 50 won't fit but I think 40 would. I'd prefer a magnification of about 6 max...depending on what I can find.

I've seen some Bushnells around $100.00

    Buried in the X-files
    Try a Nikon 3-9X Coyote.

    It's a decent scope around $200.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Well I went over to Sportsmans Warehouse yesterday with the intention of buying a Bushnell Elite 4300 that was on sale and came away with a Vortex Crossfire 4-12 for $130.00. It was a bit brighter than the Bushnell.

I hope I did OK. They do have a lifetime warranty. So I figure if the recoil is too much for it I'll be covered.
