I'm looking strongly at these two Noveske uppers:

    http://noveskerifleworks.com/cgi-bi...lrb-556&cat=138&page=1&search=&since=&status=

    I want a lightweight upper ... I find the long, 4-sided rails very top-heavy.

What I really want is light weight, plus the ability to add a light and laser. That's it (at least, for this build!)

I'm leaning towards the upper with the simple, standard M4 handguard. But I can't figure out how I could attach a light / laser with this setup. Is it possible? Is there a downside to the M4 handguard, so much so that I would be better served with a shorter, 4-sided rail?

Sorry if these are simple questions. This is my first build. I'm sure I won't get everything perfect the first time out, but just trying to get something I can learn with.

    Thanks for all the help.

    Cheers!

I got the second one and put some MOE handguards on ($30ish) so I could add a light. Works perfectly, without adding a bunch of weight.

That seems perfect! How difficult are the handguards to install? Do I have to disassemble the entire upper to take off the original M4 handguard?

    Thanks for your help.

My N4 is similar, but I believe that the MagPul forearm is the lightest way to go.

I am still new to the AR rifles, I like my rifle a lot and maybe I am just missing something. Please forgive me if I sound naive, but is an upper really worth 2300? Is it really that much better than everything else? Am I missing out on something awesome?
Both uppers look fantastic - I was just curious.

The 16" Recon (first link) is $2300 for the entire rifle, or $1300 for just the upper.

The 16" Light Recce Basic (second link) is $1480 for the entire rifle, or $755 for just the upper.

I've heard that Noveske is considered very close to the top of the line, if not the top (next to BCM, which I never thought was that good of quality but apparently they are right up there with Noveske, after doing research)

They're very easy to get on. Just like putting on the regular handguards.

Keep in mind, that price includes the BCG and a Troy rear sight (about $230ish).

Also, the Noveske N4 Light barrels are about the best chrome lined barrels out there.

BCM's quality is up with noveske but they can't touch their barrels.

Don't buy carbine handguards for that midlength upper.

I have the Reece Light Midlength like the second one and picked up a brand new N4 lower for $250 complete from Noveske (not a blem lower) and ended up with the complete rifle for under $1k. I found a great deal on the upper, that $755 DOES NOT include flip-up Troy Rear sight. Add another $90 or so for that

Thanks, you guys. This info has been great.

Once again, this forum has proven invaluable.

Based on the pics from NeverMore1701, I'm going to get the basic 16" light recce, and put on the mid-length Magpul MOE. Didn't even know these existed until you guys helped, but this is exactly what I want.

    Thanks again.

    Cheers!

From Noveske website from provided link

--Flip-up rear sight (NOT INCLUDED ON UPPER)

Just didn't want him to be surprised if it didn't include it like the website says. I would call and make sure, I wouldn't expect it....for $755

Try this one. Light weight free floated and you can add rail sections where you want.

The down side to standard plastic hand guards is they are not free floated which hurts your practical accuracy.

Did not know that. Good info. I'll check out the rail that you mentioned. Thanks.

I don't have any hard numbers, but I would bet this weighs same or less as one with a standard FSB and MOE hand guards. FSB's are really heavy and all that weight is out on the end of the barrel. The Troy TRX Extreme on this one is really really light for a rail system.

All good choices though. Can I ask why you are only looking at Noveske? I would check out BCM and Daniel Defense too. Noveske does probably have an edge in barrels but all 3 manufacturers are top quality.

For anyone looking at the TRX rail system, I would suggest the VTAC version of it. The little bit I have handled the standard TRX rail, it tends to be very hard on bare hands, whereas the VTAC version is much smoother.

I'm new to the AR world so I don't know much about Magpul quality reputation, but I like the look of that setup. Very nice.

No good reason, other than, for years, I have seen them mentioned as a "top tier" manufacturer. I'm new to the AR platform, and there is such a bewildering selection, I went with one that I knew was good. It might not be the best choice, but at least it isn't a wrong choice.

And I thought there were a lot of decisions to make in the handgun world. Wow.

    Cheers!
