I am looking for a hot and accurate 38 Super +p load. I would like to use a 125gr bullet with a velocity of about 1,400fps from a five inch barrel.

Can anyone help and please try to be specific on the bullet needed.

    Thanks,

    Jim

Try http://www.accuratepowder.com/load-data/ They have an aa#7 load that gets a 124gr to 1388. you could possibly work up a load from that. Also try http://www.lapua.com/en/products/reloading/vihtavuori-reloading-data/relodata/6/30
They have a 124gr N105 load that makes 1400-1500fps. I have not tried either of these loads since i cant find either powder locally, but they are the only published loads Ive found that will come close to what you want.

Ive had good luck running a slightly over max 124gr gold dot blue dot load in my Kimber Aegis. It cronos at an average of 1350.

What are you going to use this for? Compeition or SD?

Use 124gr JHP data, start low and work your up.

I just ordered 2 lbs. of N105 and I will start at about 9 gr for both 124 and 125 bullets.

    Thanks everyone.

Im curious to know how that works out. Im tempted to get some of that the next time i get a bulk order together. Just SO expensive. A 125gr gold dot moving at 1500fps would make one hell of an SD round though.

You might want to get a fully supported barrel from Kings or someone else before redlining the Soup. Ask me why I am telling you this.

With the right barrel and AA#9, you can can get some interesting performance with 140 grain xtp bullets. Look on brian enos forums. There is a lot of info out there with VV powder and AA9 for the heavier bullets. Don't look at "power factor" because it does not have anything to do with anything outside of gun golf games.

Most accurate for me have been the 125 HAP rounds with AA7. Make sure your recoil spring is not worn out before you start playing rough, better yet, get a 20 pounder from wolff.

Thanks, it is an unsupported barrel, but it is a BarSto Match barrel and I do not think I will be milling my slide and replacing it. When the VVN105 comes in, I will start with about 8.8gr. and a 125 Seirra JHP and start to work my way up to check case buldge due to unsupported chamber. I have shot CorBon 9X23 rounds in it with out issue.

Are you planning to run these at SAAMI +P levels (33,000 CUP)? If so, you can try Blue Dot, Power Pistol or Longshot.

I run 9x23 Winchester in a Crawley custom 1911a1 with a fully supported Nowlin barrel. But these loads run up to 50,000 psi. And for those loads I really like VV 3n37 and AA7. AA7 comes alive at about 40k psi and stays linear with no surprise spikes in pressure (which I cannot say for Blue Dot).

If you don't have a fully supported chamber in your gun, then I'd be careful exceeding the +P book loads. The 38 Super brass is nowhere near as strong as the Winchester 9x23 brass I use.

Edited to add: A look in the 49th Lyman manual shows a load with a Hornady 124 grain fmj/fp, CCI 500 primers and Lil' Gun, COL @ 1.165":

    Start: 12.5 grains, 1267 fps @ 27,400 CUP

MAX: 13.9 grains (compressed charge), 1383 fps @ 32,600 CUP.
