Yesterday september 30 '06 the navy closed the base here in Iceland. The Navy base had been open and active for 55 years. Now, with no Navi personell on the base we (police) handle security on the base witch is pretty much empty so there is nothing much going on. Beeing a NATO base there are still som buildings here that need checking so we have to stay here but it's very strange driving around base with no military personel around, kind of lonley actualy.

I was stationed there from 1976 - 1978 at the Grindavik transmitter site. Is the communications station gone too including Grindavik?
