    Corrections...

    Hey guys, guess what? Nandy Pacheco has been serving ENDANGERED FISH in his resto/cafe, thus breaking the DENR's strict laws on protected species!

    His resto openly carried dishes made with Napoleon Wrasse, or "MAMENG"

    Mwehehehehehe...

    He pulled it off the menu though, but this still should be told to the public.

    What's the name of Mr. Pacheco's resto anyway, so I'll remember not to eat there when I'm in Metro Manila?

    He could still be convicted if he had it in his menu. The menu is proof that he served whale meat.

    There should be a sticker made that says: "Gunowners Protect Whales."

    I'm sure everyone would appreciate further detail and evidence,
    or better yet proof, that whale meat was being served in a
    dining establishment owned by anti-gunner Nandy Pacheco.

    Bad enough he wants to disarm me and mine. If he's breaking
    environmental laws --MARINE environmental laws, at that--
    then he needs to be hauled off to court.

    Again, apologies for the wrong 1st post, I emailed Ms. Lory Tan the writer of the article, and she said that it's Napoleon Wrasse is an endangered/declining fish once served in Nandy's resto, now pulled off the menu.

    The whale meat is being served in some Japanese restos in Makati.

    Again my apologies, and thanks to Ms. Tan for her prompt email and clarification.

    Nevertheless, it's still wrong to serve endagered or banned species in a restaurant.

    I agree. I'm still not going to his resto.

    Question: Why does he get so much press from PDI about his advocacies, but not for this particular issue? They PDI story on this was spun so that it's good that they pulled it off the menu, but like you said, it was already served before, so damage has already been done.

    I tried Googling his name and found a lot of editorials from PDI praising him and his party...I thought that it's supposed to be unbiased news?

    Anyway, I'm going to email my DENR friends to ask if they received any sanctions or fines...

    Ah... that's better.

    I had serious doubts that Pacheco had a stake in either of the two
    Japanese restaurants mentioned. I used to eat at Tsukiji from time
    to time, meeting with clients. The prices were hilarious, the menus
    all in Japanese, and there occasionally were too many drunk Yakuza
    types during the wee hours. My knees didn't appreciate the climb up.
    Things may have changed.

    I wouldn't have noticed any Minke whale meat on the menu.
    If it's (still) there, it's likely imported frozen from Japan, or
    else mislabeled dolphin (or other) meat. While wild stocks of
    Balaenoptera acutorostrata scammoni have been rising, and
    there have been calls for delisting (CITES) the species, it's still
    CITES App.I, and the importation of B. acutorostrata meat is
    quite actionable.

    As for the restaurant purportedly owned (in whole or in part) by
    Nandy Pacheco serving "mameng".. let's not get too excited.

    Firstly, they've supposedly already taken it off the menu.
    Secondly, Cheilinus undulatus is CITES App.II, right?
    That chiefly means that we Filipinos can't export the species
    if we cannot prove sustainable wild harvest. I'm not saying that
    we've proven sustainability, nor that we do not illegally export
    plate-sized Cheilinus and other dinner Labriids. What I am saying is
    that CITES focuses on export/import, while local consumption
    is a different and sovereign matter.

    There is a lot of documentation on the efficacy of MPA's* in the
    Visayas, reversing a 25-year downward trend in fish catch. It is
    not too far-fetched to wonder if C. undulatus stocks have also
    benefited from MPA's, especially given the size of live specimens
    and the volume of the illicit export of the same towards Hong Kong.
    If anything, the unabated (illegal) export of "mameng" may simply
    showcase the resilience of Philippine wild stock. The rest of the
    world has screwed up their reef stocks far more recklessly, and
    irreversibly.

    Finally...
    Until definitive proof is presented that this or that restaurant
    is owned partly or wholly by Pacheco, I'd advise everyone to remember
    that the Four Rules of shooting can apply to boycotts as well.
    To wit: if Pacheco owns a few shares of stock in San Miguel Beer,
    do we then boycott SMB?

    This is a very expensive fish IIRC around 2k per kl. at a chinese restaurant in Q.C.
