The reason I asked is that I own a newer Mini 30 and shoot commie ammo out of it. It is very hard to find non commie 7.62 mm X 39 mm.

A very good friend and local detective investigated a shooting where kids were shooting a SKS and the bullet bounced and hit a girl 283 yards in the hip and put her down.

He was very impressed by the 7.62 round enough that he wanted to shoot a Mini 30. I had a new one so we shot it and the accuracy was very good with iron sights being shot by "old eyes". We were interested in seeing what it could do with good ammo. I finally found Hornady ammo this winter and we will put a scope on it and see.

If a person has a Ruger Mini 30 they are going to shoot commie ammo out of it and Ruger knows that. The Russian 7.62 X 39 mm doesn't even use a .308" bore. I find it hard to believe Ruger has a softer firing pin than brass primer. I think there is something else wrong with your rifle.

I and my friends have broke very few Rugers but when we did Ruger treated us better than you were. Sorry for you problems with them and your rifle.

Give Ruger a call ash ask them about the hard primers, extra power hammer springs and firing pin life. You will get an ear full. The firing pin problem is greatly due to it's design, not real it's material. When I first bought mine, about ten years ago, Winchester White Box 7.62z39 was everywhere. I shot that until it fired up, then came the Norinco and the firing pin problems.

Join up at, it is a Mini 14 forum......tons of info about this there.

Man I really want one of these. Seems like the perfect rainy day/SHTF kinda gun. Kinda like a poor man's M1A.

Take it a step further and get the poor mans mini 30, the Saiga sporterized AK. They are amazing but sooner or later you end up converting them.

    Man, screw that!!!

If a gun company puts out a product that can't consume 99% of the available ammo on the market and then has the nerve to rape a customer on the cost of the repair, that was due to their bad design, they don't deserve any business.

That's class action lawsuit material right there.

    Nice looking rifle.

I bought one a few years ago. It's always been reliable. I really like it. My main purpose for it is home defense and just shooting for fun.

Personally, I choose not to shoot the russian ammo, or any other steel case ammo. But that's just a personal preference.

I would like to have one of the stainless Mini 6.8's that Ruger doesn't make anymore.

That is was Ruger most certainly does NOT have to do, IMHO.

The Ruger is a publically-permissable rifle firing a military cartridge, in militery capacity, with military accuracy, WITHOUT being cursed as an "assault rifle".

Slap an AK mag, and the "assault rifle" accoutaments on it, and it will be another demonized black rifle.

And I have shot steel cased ammo with no issues, but I feed it brass when I can.

    Got one.

By the time I found one and ammo to shoot in it Ruger stopped making them. I generally shoot everything I own but held off on this one. What little amount of 6.8 ammo I have I use in my Rock River 6.8.

I've had a Mini 30 since they first came out. I shoot deer with mine which is what they were intended for. Never felt a need to play range commando so I haven't shot more than a couple thousand rounds through it in the 25 years I've had it. I did take the scope off it and put a Tech Sight on it which is much better than the original Ranch Rifle sight.

I love Ruger and especially my Mini-14, BUT, I have two Russian SKS's and if I'm going to purchase another 7.62X39 it's going to be an AK.:wavey:

But your Mini-30 is pretty awesome, Congrats!

  15. Except for the sights, that describes an AK.:whistling:
