So all I did was change the batteries in my wireless mouse and now no matter what I do the mouse pointer speed reverts to the fastest setting. I try slowing it down under the control panel, hit apply, and then ok. It stays that way for a few seconds but then jumps back to the fastest speed.

Just using the stock HP mouse that came with my computer and the standard Windows XP mouse drivers. Never had this problem before. Any ideas anyone?

You didn't say you tried replacing the mouse? Not unheard of for them to break or become 'uncalibrated'. Though most mice I've seen break manifest the initial problem by creeping all around the screen and jumping to corners. -dok

I would just go buy a optical or laser mouse. Factory ones are good for a while, but they break.
