Mossberg SA-20

Discussion in 'Tactical Shotguns' started by KenMac, Oct 6, 2012.

  1. I'd like to find a HD shotgun for my wife who is intimidated by my 930 SPX. After some research, and eliminating pumps because she probably wouldn't learn the procedure to run the gun, the SA-20 seems to be the most likely answer. I understand that they're made in Turkey, and are not in the 2012 Mossberg catalog. I'd like any feedback from anyone with knowledge of these shotguns. Thanks in advance for your input.
P.S. I forgot to mention that tactical style is preferred.

  3. They are still listed on the website.

  4. I did not know that the Mossberg 20 gauge is made in Turkey.

I was searching for a youth model 20 gauge semi auto for my wife - decided on the Mossberg - but could never find one to buy.

I walked into Academy Sports and stumbled across a Hatsan Escort semi auto 20 gauge youth model. It came with 3 chokes - on sale - it was $249 + tax.

I did some quick research - it is made in Turkey - took a chance - glad I did - nice gun so far 100% reliable.

I wonder if Hatsan is making the Mossberg gun?

  5. Nice looking gun. I'd like to hear how it shoots.

    Please vote! It's that important!
  6. The GOOD:

I like shooting it - mostly clay targets - loads of fun.

So far 100% reliable on every type of ammo - even the Winchester bird shot target load crap from Walmart -

It feels very light - if I shoot my 870 for a while and then pick up the Escort it feels like a toy.

It came with 3 chokes (IC, Modified, Full)

Wife can't pick up the 870 - but she handles this just fine

    The price was fantastic

    The BAD

The funky looking recoil pad is worthless. The company claims it helps reduce recoil - it does nothing. Because of the unique design you can't just go buy a limbsaver or after market recoil pad.

So I did some modifications --

Cut off and sanded down the existing pad.

Installed a limbsaver slip on pad

The fact that it is not a "normal" gun (Remington or Mossberg) I assume parts and accessories will be had to find. If you want to modify it and add tactical doodads this is not the gun you want.

Things like a magazine tube extension are impossible to find.

My wife had never shot a shotgun before - she tried to shoulder my 870 and just said - NO WAY - she expressed a willingness to try and shoot clay targets (I have a thrower) but we needed a gun - Like I said before I wanted a Mossberg youth model - just could not find one -

I would normally be willing to wait for the gun I really want - but was afraid my wife would change her mind - so I took a chance and grabbed the Escort -

I have no regrets - it is a sweet little gun -

But if I had a Mossberg and an Escort both available I would have paid the extra - ~~ $150? - for the Mossberg.

EDIT - Buds has the Mossberg is stock - $410."+Chamber24"+Vent+Rib+BarrelSynthetic+Sto

  7. I also checked at Acadmy and they only had one 20 auto, and i'd never heard of the brand. I think it's called Yildiz or something like that. The counter guy said it is imported exclusively by Academy. He also said they'd had no complaints from buyers and thought possibly Yildiz made the Mossberg SA-20.............who knows?
  8. Unk

Improper shotgun FIT turns off a lot of women and youth shooters..pretty much length of pull, weight..and too early introduction to heavy loads. Realistic explanation of recoil and muzzle blast along with hearing protection and safety glasses required.

Used full-sized 12 ga pump with stock cut down shooting AA [or other low brass] 7-9 shot an option as you can re-stock as children grow into adults.

  9. The Mossberg SA-20 is made in Turkey by the same company that makes the Weatherby SA-08.

I have one for the wife. The bolt release is very stiff and is not pressed straight in but tilted to the back to release. It originally had feed problems but seems to work fine after a trip back to Mossberg on their dime. The top rail is nice for mounting optics.
  11. good thread- you have to sift through a bunch of crazy stuff to find anything useful about an escort shotgun if you search on the wrong word "escort"- this is what I was hoping to find out- seems like a hell of a deal
  12. Why does everyone think women are so stupid when it comes to running a firearm? "She probably won't know how to operate a semi auto so I'm gonna get her a little Smith J Frame...." She probably can't learn how to run a pump shotgun so I'm gonna get her a cheap semi auto 20 gauge.

If she can learn to drive a car without killing anyone, she can learn to use any modern firearm.
