I found a lightly used one with the extended mag tube for @$250.
Essentially, it looks like a model 500, except it has the factory extended mag tube that goes to the end of the barrel. Is it basically a 500?
Is it a good gun? Basically equal to the 500, or is it cheaper made that should make me worry?
Will the Knoxx recoil stock from my regular 500 work on this gun?
    Is 250 a reasonable price?

I have really been wanting a Rem 870 (tactical/police, or whatever you call it), but the price and possibility of switching the stock makes it an interesting possibility of a deal.
I would really appreciate some opinion, and especially knowledge of the interchangability.

    Thanks,
    Rod

The gun has the crossbolt safety at the front of the trigger housing(like an 870).

    oldman,
    does the stock interchange?

If so, I am going to pull the trigger on this one.

  4. It is 95% a 500. The safety arrangement is different and the forearm arrangement is different (or used to be...action bars integral with the forearm). Other than those differences, it is a 500 and uses the same parts. Think of the 88 as the basic, no frills, few options version of the 500 with the changes noted above. Both the Mossberg 500 and the Maverick 88 are now assembled in Eagle Pass, Texas with a mixture of parts...some U.S. made, some made in Torreon, Mexico. The 88 is a good gun...just like the 500 is a good gun.

Very good gun! I picked up a new one for ~290.00. I'm not sure if the triggers are interchangeable with the 500 though.

Is this the one you are talking about? It's a Maverick 88

Yes, that is the same gun, but it is available local and not from Buds. Good price they have, though. And it gives me a little more leverage in my negotiation when I can buy a new one for $250 including shipping and my FFL fee.

    Thanks for that link.

I think I do want it because it is no nonsense and 8 rounds of goodness.

With the safety's in two different places, I'd guess that is a "No"

$250 in 2012 just before the elections and the whole 2012 thing? Yeah sounds about right. Demand for any gun will go up under these circumstances Im guessing.

I paid $199 brand new with the extended mag in 2008.

Academy sells the Maverick here for $190. Now that is the one without the extended mag, but I think you can buy that seperately.

They do not offer the extended mag version of the gun.
I will try Academy and a few other box stores as well as my LGS.

I picked up a brand new Mav 88 with the 18" 1/2 barrel (like that style better) for $219 at Turners, $250-290 seems high.

The Mav 88 is a bit gritty, to say the least.

If you own one, did you disassemble and buff/polish any action parts to make it somewhat smoother? I wouldnt mess with the trigger.

BTW, the store I got to hold it in wanted $339+/-. I was :wow: for a minute, but it is his store and he must make $(dude had an awesome store with the best selection I have seen lately). Probably wont buy right now anyways at that price, but I was thankful to hold it.

  18. $250.00 on a used Maverick 88 is too high. Most used Maverick 88 I've seen go for about $150 to $199.

I'm a long time fan of the Remington 870 but got a wild hair and got a used 28" Maverick for $120. I liked it so much that I bought a new 18 1/2" Maverick for about $200. Later, Midway offered an 18 1/2" barrel for $72 so I got that and switched the 28" barrel out. Barrels for the Mossberg 500 fit perfectly. I bought a boatload of 00 buck and slugs in short magnums.
