Hello, I've decided on a Mossberg 590 for my first shotgun, it will be used primarily for home defense, I'm looking at the 51410 model and am curious about the capacity, the website says 6 shot, is this 6 total? or 6+1? what is the maximum with a mag tube ext. with an 18.5 barrel? which extender is the best? thanks!

    6 shot on Mossy's website means 5+1.

Just a guess, but the 20" 590 holds 8+1, so an extension flush to an 18.5" bbl would likely be 7+1.

If I was you, I'd look at the "51517 590A1 LE" for $429.00. What price was the 590 you were looking at?

I like that model also, I like the versatility of ghost sites but I want sights with tritium, I was thinking about upgrading later on, I'm not sure what they cost in my area, it will be a special order from my local range

Depending on your price, you really can't go wrong with either or. The 590's are virtually the same gun minus the steel safety, and steel trigger guard. All of the 590A1's come equipped with the heavy walled barrel, which is only sporadically available on the 590 SP's.

If it was me, I'd go with either of the two equipped with ghost ring sights, then upgrade to tritium from there.

Don't need GRS for HD. That said, sometimes you just need to get what you need to get...

    Circling the wagons.
    The 18.5" guns have a 5+1 capacity, the 20" guns have a 8+1 capacity.

Choate Machine and Tool now makes an extension for the 18.5" that can do +2 if the stock follower is retained. Makes the gun 7+1. Their part number is 02-04-01 and it is NOT on their website yet.
