I will be enlisting in the Army soon, hopefully as a Paralegal Specialist. I have heard that this MOS is somewhat difficult to get, and I want to know what my chances are. Apparently, the criteria for acceptance is dependent on test scores and whether a position is vacant. I am not concerned with my test scores (perfect score on the practice ASVAB I took at the recruiter's office), but the vacancy thing has me a little worried. Does anyone have any knowledge of the turnover rate for this MOS?

It is very difficult to become a 27D. Over the two years I've been a judge advocate I've only known one who left the Army before retirement, and that was because he was admitted to Harvard Law School. I've never heard of any 27D voluntarily reclassifying to another MOS. It usually takes a lot more points to get promoted than in just about any other MOS because the JAG Corps is never hurting for 27Ds.

You might find a bit faster career advancement in the Reserve. My unit, the 6th JAG out of Seattle's Fort Lawton (but soon to be at Tacoma's Fort Lewis) always needs 27Ds. I imagine the other LSOs are the same. We promote 'em fairly quickly too. Having said that, I've been Reserve status only, and cannot tell you what the AC promotion rates are. Slyjackalope observations are spot on. I know of only one 27D who left, to take a Transp butterbar commission, but he's going to law school and coming back as a 27A if he can.

Crunch is right--call the JAG Center and Law School (TJAGLCS) in Charlottesville, and see what they say.

I have a friend who was an active duty 27D with 18th Abn Corps. He reclassified to 11B as primary MOS.

I am a 27D and going 27A in February (Active Duty). The chances of getting the MOS are pretty good if you ask for it and don't take no for an answer. Some of the guys in my AIT were not the sharpest knives in the drawer and seemed to have no problem getting in.
