I will have my S&W model 640 arrive by Thursday or Friday of this week the only problem is the specific ammo I want to carry in it is on back order for a while (135gr. speer GDHP for short barrel). I do have a box of 158 gr. speer GDHP that is used for my girlfriends S&W 686 with a 4 inch barrel. So I am wondering would that ammo/gun combo be something that I could depened my life on (knock on wood) until my short barrel ammo comes in from being backorder. OR does anyone have any other ammo suggestions that would be good for carrying for self defense. I am open to any and all suggetions. Thanks in advance.

Ammo To Go has the Gold Dot short barrels in stock. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer.

Just because it's not specified for short barrel revolvers doesn't make it inferior. The ammo in the 686 will still get the job done. I personally role my own 158 JHPs.

I just pick up a 340SC and and would like to carry the GD but haven't been able to find it locally, but I was able to find Winchester PDX1 130gr .38 spcl +P. I winchester puts out a very good SD loads and also got some 125gr Golden saber's.

Well I have some good news all around. The 640 did arrive and I got it to the range and performed top notch with both 38 and 357 (Winchester White box). I ordered some buffalo bore tactical low flash low recoil 158 gr 357 magnum because they use Speer gold dot Bullets. I received them and to my surprise it came with Semi jacketed hollow points that were defiantly not speer bullets.

I did a little research on various forums and websites and got a general consensus that SJHP are not bad fro defensive carry and buffalo bore assured me that the owner only uses the highest quality avaiable to him and the only reason they did not come with speer gold dot bullets is that they were very hard to come by.

Taking the suggestions from beancounter81 and den888 I ordered some Speer Gold Dot 135 gr short barrel ammo from ammo to go. So now my plan is to use the Speer in more urban type environments (such as where I work) since it's less likely for the 135 gr to over penetrate and save the 158 gr from buffalo bore for less populated areas (such as the area I actually live).

In my opinion and some authors that I have read such as Evan Marshal and Massod Ayoob feel, the 158 Grain 357 Round is too heavy for self defense. this weight offers too much penetration with the possibility of going threw the target and hitting innocent bystanders. you would be better served by using 125 Grain 357 which is the #1 Stopper.

The over penetration is why I am saving the 158 gr. more so for the 4 legged predators rather than the 2 legged. I opted for the 135 gr. gold dot short barrel as the FBI and various other law enforcement agencies approve of their performance and I figured I am not risking too much over penetration going with the 135 gr. over 125.

Must have read the same articles. Stock up on 125 gr. JHP's in any of the major brands unless you only trust the big names for a 10'-15' shot.

The 110gr. 357 mag load like the WW personnel defence load are plenty powerful and repeat shots are fast. The 110gr. 357 is a street stopper and will dump all its power in the perp with little risk of killing bystanders and ricochets.
