As guns get smaller and smaller we are starting to see micro 45 ACP guns
with as little as 3" barrels.

Even with high tech bullets, is there a minimum effective barrel length
    for expansion from a 230 gr 45?

As we both know, longer barrels generate higher velocities, and the same bullet at higher velocity hits harder. That said, many feel a need for shorter barrels for concealment. High tech loads like the Gold Dot Short Barrel -- and the Ranger-T, the HST, and the Golden Saber -- were all engineered to open at lower velocities.
