    They took a $6B charge-off, that's how.

Somebody made an opps...If it is a little somebody, well guess they can enjoy unemployment. If it was a big somebody they can just move on to their next screwup after walking away with their multimillion dollar parachute. Such is the nature of big business.

You don't actually think that's how businesses work, do you?

Big businesses take big risks. Sometimes they lose big.

All I know is that if I were to lose my company 6 billion dollars I would be fired. When the CEO did it, he got a 30% RAISE.

Five years ago, Microsoft bet that buying an online ad service would be more effective than trying to stand one up from scratch, and paid a big chunk of change for aQuantitative.

They were wrong, and this quarter they took a write-off of the $6+ billion acquisition cost. This is an accounting charge only; it does not mean the money disappeared this quarter.

Ballmer's 30% raise is not directly tied to this charge. In the same announcement of the net loss, Microsoft announced record revenues of $18+ billion for the QUARTER. $18 billion in 3 months. That's probably why, in fact, they chose to take the charge-off now, to take a paper loss against their profits for tax purposes.

    Had a couple of write-offs....

It's not as bad as what is being portrayed....revenue was up $.11/share over analysis predictions...they still had a good quarter!
