This is for those who are in Michigan and would be interested in attending an open carry lunch. You do not have to open carry or anything it's a pretty good time and a great chance to talk guns and other stuff with like minded people.

Stirring up the anti's on purpose is not a good idea. Look how well it worked for California OC'ers. Just saying.

  4. Not an issue in Michigan because, as I'm sure you realize, Michigan is not California. God bless federalism.

Exactly. This is what a person who has been OCing in Michigan for a while now had to say about OC in Michigan. I have to say he's spot on.

I'm a CC'er and do not open carry. Why not? OC does draw attention to ones self weather that is the intention or not. I naturally don't blend in with a crowd very well and I can do without the added attention. I like to keep life interesting but I also like to keep life simple.

That being said.. I'll also say I think open carry is great! I like to hear when OC'ing makes the news, helps make it not such a big deal.

What hapened with the guy who OC'ed while voting at a public school? From what I understand he was questioned by police and allowed to vote. No immediate charges but apparently there is a potential problem because public schools are a "pistol free zone" The OC'er was saying the because he had a CPL (Concealed Pistol License) he was allowed to OC in pistol free zones. I hadn't heard that before and haven't checked on that yet.

  7. He was not and will not be charged. It is true, with a carry permit, one can OC (and only OC) in most Michigan Pistol Free Zones. All of this is spelled out really nice in MSP Legal Update #89 (Google it.)

For the record, I CC 99% of the time. The only time I OC is when I'm in one of those PFZs. However, I think it is important for gun rights for OC to be recognized and accepted as legal.

Do you find a lot of people in MI that OC? Where are they?

I live about 25 miles north of Detroit and have seen 2 people in 24 years OC. My father and I find it very odd as if they person open carrying is trying to prove something.

HOWEVER I only feel this way because it is not common practice in my area. I only CC .

This post was not meant to offend your views and I hope you respond with some knowledge about the subject for myself :) thank you

A lot of people who OC seem to be in south east MI (general Detroit area). Although we do have OCers all over the state. Those of us who OC on a consistant basis and a lot of the people who do choose to OC do not do it to prove anything. They, like concealed carriers, hope to never have to use their firearm in SD. Many of us OCers look at it as a deterrent for crime. We do have many cases where the sight of an openly carried gun prevent crime, mostly robbery.

The reason you may not have seen many OCers could be because 1. they were some place you were you just didn't notice them OCing; 2. It's not like hundreds of thousands of people who OC in Michigan. While there are many people who do the number is just not that high. We only have a little over 300,000 CPL holders in MI and most OCers do have a CPL. Typically the ones who don't are those of us under 21 or those who are in the process of getting one.

If you are curious about OC I'd suggest checking out that website I have in the links above and look for an OC meeting near you. And don't worry you in no way offended me. You response was very respectful and showed you realized that you only knew your side of OC and not the other side.
