Ok I was curious if you have a Maryland CCW do you need to get one of the new Handgun Licenses come October 1st. As all of you know in order to get a Maryland CCW the MSP does a COMPLETE background check and you need fingerprinted as well. Since you have to repeat this every 3 years in order to renew your permit, with that being said what is the point that you have to get another background check and fingerprinted just to get one of the new licenses that is good for 10 years.

Here is the response I got from MSP:

If you have an active handgun permit you will be exempt from the training aspect of the new law but after October 1st you will need an QHL to purchase any new handguns in the State of MD. The only people that are exempt from the QHL's are active and retired police and active and retired military. Former police and former military are not exempt. They have to be carrier retired military or police to be exempt. Also anyone that currently has a handgun registered to them is exempt from the training aspect as well as anyone that has been through the MD hunters safety course with the DNR. They all still need the QHL to buy new weapons.
