I was test driving cars today and am torn between the manual and automatic/paddle shift transmission. It has been years since I had a manual and it felt good running through the gears but the auto with paddle shift was pretty nice as well.

As much as I want the manual, the automatic seemed to do the job pretty well.

The car was a Mini Cooper if it matters.

    What do you prefer?

I prefer automatics, because it's difficult to text and drink a tall boy while driving a manual.

Color me lazy but if I was going to spend a fair amount of time in urban traffic jams I'd opt for the automatic. If not, in a Mini the manual.

I prefer an automatic unless the car is one I bought for fun. Love a small sporty car with stick shift, on a larger, daily driver type car I don't see any reason to get a stick, automatics are so reliable now.

Manual all the way. All my trucks are manuals. And as Americans become more and more lazy and fewer and fewer learn to drive manuals, eventually several things will happen:

    1. The likelihood of theft diminished dramatically.
    2. You slowly become the Macintosh user of the Auto world.
    3. Chicks dig a man that takes control and asserts his authority! (LOL!!!)

I bought a Mini Cooper S in 2005 as a second car. It has the 6 speed auto with the paddels.

I love it. It is also very intuitive and will shift down automatically when you put on the brakes going downhill.

    I say auto....

I love manual. Ill never own a automatic unless its got some type of sportstronic transmission. I drove a 2013 s60 the other day and the sports mode was fun, but still wasnt the same not truly going through the gears.

I can drive both equally well and learned in a manual car.

With all the overdrive auto's now I can't see bothering with a manual

    Not really.

I hate driving automatics. Both of my vehicles are autos:crying:

I'm one of the oddballs, have never owned an auto and can't stand the idea of ever spending good money on an auto. I recently rented a car with paddle shifters and they are ridiculously useless, autosticks are even worse. Either shift like a man or buy the auto. Minis are fun little cars meant to be driven like race cars, do the right thing.

I hate automatics makes me feel like i have less control of the vehicle. But maybe im a control freak but the manuals will give you better gas mileage if driven right.

Auto for my daily driver these days. Miles and miles of stop and go traffic in the city take all the fun out of a manual for me. I've never used a paddle shift.

Manuals for me. I have owned a few over the years and I currently drive a 5-speed Mazda.

We have both, I drive what is left in the driveway. Learned how to drive many years ago. 3 on a tree, 4 speed on the floor, large trucks, (have driven a semi a few times and those guys have to work).

If I had a small agile car I would want a stick shift.
When traffic is horrible I would prefer an automatic.

I am of the school that everyone should learn on a stick especially in this world, never know when the need might arise.

Most of the stealerships around here don't have much in the way of passenger vehicles with sticks.

I turn 65 next month and am thinking of buying a new 5.0 mustang or porsche cayman with automatic. I have had lots of sports cars over the years, and used to like driving with a stick. Even though I still have the need for speed, I have to admit with the new automatic transmissions I think I can have just as much fun, with a little less work. I even have an auto clutch on my dirt bike now.

I get a smile on my face every time I get in my Mazdaspeed3 with it's TWM short shift and solid metal bushings kit. May be the best mod ever. Easy DIY. The cp-e CAI is a close second. 280hp/300lb-ft.

I do it almost every day.

I row my own because it's fun. Manual all the way.
