To be frank, It is out of focus, the lighting is poor, and the composition is lacking.

    Neat idea, just poorly executed.

I don't mean to offend, it's just that you asked for opinions.:)

Grainy and OOF (out of focus) are two very different things. In the shot in the other thread you started, the bottle is OOF but there isn't grain. The gorgeous water is in focus (and that would have made a nice shot itself to maybe use for your desktop for example).

Grainy is known as "noise" in digital photography or as grain in film. It is generally viewed as a bad distortion in an image. Noise results from your sensor (the little gizmo that captures the image) or from the wrong exposure. A lot of times, it is a combination of the two. You will find a lot less grain on the high-end cameras (prosumer models most people don't want) compared to others you can pick up at somewhere like Wal-Mart. Also, what was considered a pretty good camera five years ago can produce images that are so grainy they are considered trash by today's standards.

All that said, the presence of noise is something I seek out sometimes. I have deliberately underexposed images just too get some grain for an effect.

How's that for muddying the waters?

Oh, the two shots of you and the little girl are great snapshots. She is really cute. Nice additions to an album or scrapbook. :)
