Lower Priced Optics for A2 with permanent handle?

I apologize now if this has been covered a dozen times here somewhere. I did some poking around and I don't see what I'm looking for.

I have a Bushy A2 with the permanent handle that I purchased during the Clinton Ban. Is there an OK optics option without breaking the bank. Will I really need to swap the receiver for a flat top, or can I do this without?

I'm hoping for a unit that I can do fairly close fighting. I am a civilian. This gun spends most of its time in the safe. I have it for home defense, and target shooting.

    Thoughts?

This type of mount is pretty popular. Check out different sites, including ebay for a good deal. This one is expensive. I've seen them for as little as $5.

Any current non-magnified RDS can be used on a fixed handle upper with a gooseneck adapter. It screws through the hole in the carry handle, and puts a rail directly in front of the carry handle to mount your RDS on. Not sure who makes the best quality one, but stay the hell away from UTG.

As for the optic, buy the best one you can budget for. If you can spend an extra couple weeks saving up, and get an Aimpoint M2, PRO or EO Tech, do it. If even the $400 for an Aimpoint PRO is far out of your price range, Primary Arms has gotten a lot of good reviews (and Marshal from PA posts here on a regular basis). For a HD gun, though, my opinion is to always go with a top-shelf optic whenever budget will allow for it. If you are willing to bet your life behind a weapon (even if it's just for HD use, not LE or MIL), you should never cheap out - doing so is inviting Murphy (the ghost, not the moderator) to bite you in the ass when you need it most.

Edit: FAA beat me to it. That's what I get for taking so long to type.

The mounts that just put a rail on top of the carry handle have always seemed too damn high to me. It'll be even worse if you use a larger RDS like an Aimpoint PRO or EO Tech. The gooseneck type mounts work a LOT better, plus they allow for co-witnessing.

That was quick!! You guys are good. Thanks a bunch already. The gooseneck set-up looks like a good way to go.

Good advice WP. This gives me great places to start. Thank you.

Gosse neck handle mount and shop for a non magnifying sight. Eotech is my choice for close quart and you can find them used all the time for under 400 bucks.

Being VERY new to the whole Eotech thing, Which one, what kind of battery set-up, where do I look, etc? Sorry to load up the questions. I'm not military or LEO, so I don't typically move in the circles that know about such things. $400 is more than I was thinking originally, but I understand the comments made so far and I think I get it. If there are some more specific recommendations, that would be awesome.

I really don't want to end up with stuff that is useless. That would be worse than what I have now--the stock iron sights.

Thank you to everyone for your input!

Given how cheap stripped uppers are you're better off just swapping out the upper for a flat top.
