Looking for a quality "traditional" AK that I won't have to mess with, want it good to go out of the box. Price not being much of an issue but availability is. I don't want to wait 6 months to a year. Wood or plastic furniture doesn't matter to me, milled/stamped doesn't matter. What should I look at and what prices should I expect?

I have about the cheapest AK you can find, a Romanian WASR-10. It's not the prettiest, or greatest quality, but you can throw it off a cliff and it'll keep on truckin'...But what AK won't? :p. Anyways, all I did to mine was replace the plastic pistol grip with a wooden one, refinish all the wood, and polish my bolt carrier. You really don't have to do anything to it though, unless you really want to. I paid about $400 for mine in November, but the price has since gone up a bit. They're fairly common around where I live.

Good to go out of the box? That's the trick. That's always a gamble with AK's.

My SAR-1 (which is supposed to be near the bottom of the barrel as far as AK's go) has been absolutely flawless since the day I got it. It's not pretty, but it's solid as a rock.

My brand new Arsenal SLR-107CR (which is supposed to be about the best you can get and cost me nearly 3X what the SAR cost) stopped working at around 40 rounds the first day I shot it and had to go to the gunsmith.

So you're always taking a chance with AK's. Just get a style you like and hope for the best. There are plenty out there to choose from.

classicarms.us has Yugo M70 AB2 rifles for $470. This is the underfolder version. I have the AB1, which is the solid stock version. To me, the rifle was almost perfect, the only thing I had to do was replace the screws on the buttstock pad (the original ones were too small for the hole they were in), and wrap the tab on the front handguard that goes into the receiver with duct tape to keep the front handguard from wobbling. You can't see the duct tape btw. Otherwise, the sights and gas block were straight, and the rifle is 100% reliable. I had to finish the wood, but the AB2 is polymer. This is probably the best inexpensive AK out there, and will shoot just as well as the supposedly better brands.

Yeah, I was looking more toward the Arsenal. My buddy bought one years ago. I think he paid around $650 at the time but I wasn't interested then. Now I am regretting it. His has been great.

Buy an arsenal SGl 20 straight from the factory for 650.00. They had them on sale 2 months ago for 499.00 the same ones selling on gunbroker now for 850.00.

Skip the WASR and get a SAR-1. They can still be found at a good price. They are a good ak system rifle and you dont have to worry about canted sights or anything like that. I did have some trigger slap with a 2000 model but that is a 10min fix so no worries.

^ I agree. Right now it seems the SGL 20 or SGL 21 are the best bang for your buck. I wish I had gotten one a few months ago when they where 499.00 as my second AK. Still right now at 650-680 ins't that bad.

That looks like just what I am looking for. Any known issues with these?

Yes, there is actually one huge issue with all AKs...they are addictive.

I've never had any experience with trigger slap on my WASR, not even a little bit. It did jam once, on the sixth round fired through it, but I call the first complete magazine a guns "waking up" stage. It was expected, and I also wasn't using the greatest ammo in the world.

...and trigger slap is not restricted to WASRs. My AMD-65 had horrific trigger slap. A few minutes on the grinder and it was gone.

To the OP...probably the SGL series is your best bet, as has been mentioned. They are brand new and reasonably priced. These are genuine Russian AKs, so you can't go wrong with that. The remaining Yugo AKs are also excellent and built like tanks.

The wasr 10/63 come with Tapco triggers = No slap.

I have a SAR-1. Fugly, a little slap, a little cant, but she runs great and hits a 10" circle at 100 yards.

    Nobody mentioned a Saiga? :whistling:

I've been very happy with my WASR 10/63. I bought it new about 3 yrs ago for $300. No problems. I now have a Primary Arms MD gen 2 mounted on an Ultimak rail. It's now becoming my favorite rifle!

I have a SAR-1 and have had 2 WASRs and the WASR (2009) is way better than the SAR-1 that I have (2001). Just my experience with them.

It's pretty hard to beat the Yugo M70AB2's (under folders) especially for the money.

A big +1 on that. Mine has been perfect, no tinkering required. Which is a bummer if you like to tinker :)

    From K-VAR's website:
This is absolutely your last chance to purchase the SGL20 Saiga Rifles. Arsenal is sold out of these rifles, and K-Var has the last units.

The SGL-21 is essentially the same rifle with an extra bell or whistle.
My next AK will probably be a Yugo M70 AB2.
