Discussion in 'Black Rifle Forum' started by 1canvas, Feb 12, 2010.

  1. for those that keep ARs loaded for HD is there any issues with keeping mags loaded? i never had an issue with quality pistol mags being loaded all the time but not sure on AR mags. i have colt 20 and 30 round mags.

Over time (time being years) the feed lips will begin to creep (drift) apart which can cause malfunctions and rounds to be ejected if the mag is dropped. Alot of the synthetic (PMags) have a cover to help prevent this, although once again this is a long term process.

Really if you continutally rotate your mags out maybe bi-anually or annually you shouldn't have an issue.

I'm no expert on creep, you might ask around to be doubley sure though.

All of my HD mags are HK416 steel mags, so I am not worried.

    Alaska, again (for now)

Watch those mags and the round count. Round the 1K mark they start to fail with almost scary regularity.

We got issued them in Iraq, and ditched them shortly after. I still have a few, but they're in the training mag pile.

I just keep 1 windowed Pmag loaded with 25 rounds for home/self defense. It's more of a last ditch option, since I keep my Glock 19 (loaded with Hornady Critical Defense) next to my bed at night.

What kind of failure? Something that might happen to a mag that's loaded and fired maybe once every year or two here in SETN, or something related to the heat/sand/filth of combat in Iraq?

Kept a regular USGI mag loaded for well over a year with 20 62g hollow points and it ran just fine out at the range.

its just a mean failure, after 1k or so, the springs in the H&K start to fail.

We started to have more than average failure rates with them after they eclipsed the 1K mark.

Personally I'd stick with magpul before I'd run H&K

I've heard horror stories about the HK "high reliability" mags as well.
