Either 10mm or 357SIG. Both are good for self defense against the most likely animal or human attacks. Both work well in light rifles or carbines and are adaptable to hunt a wide range of game in either pistol or rifle. (If only there were enough carbines for them!) Both take up less space than .357 Magnum (not that the 357 Magnum's ballistics have anything wrong).

As an avid competitor, it would be between a 9mm and .40. I'd probably go .40 since it gives me more options, as I can reload .40 minor when applicable and .40 major when beneficial. Obviously, it works well for CCW and HD too.

  3. I couldn't decide between the .357 mag and the .44 mag, so I'll split the difference and say .41 mag.

Any place that would limit you to one caliber isn't going to let you carry a gun anyways.

posted from my stupid smart phone, please excuse any spelling mistakes.

Actually, when RSA did this, you could still get permit to carry concealed. My friend there was quite a collector & had to turn in all his guns. He did keep his 1911 though, one 375h&h for hunting & a 12ga. Sure it could happen here. Look where we have come just since 1968.:dunno:

My first thought would be my favorite handgun caliber 45 ACP.
I don't hunt so that would work fine.
But If I had to take game for some reason?
A 44 Mag revolver can really do it all.

Yea if I had to choose, I guess it would be a 44 mag also. My ruger super black hawk is an awsome pistol and with the ability to shoot 44 spc and magnum, and being able to reload in either , its pretty versitile.

For those that say "I don't hunt", remember this would be for the rest of your life. I would not want to limit myself to a lesser caliber. If I had to go semiauto, then a 10mm makes a lot of sense, but it would never be a 44mag.:dunno:

I do hunt but I prefer a compound bow for that. I have a G20 and love everything about the gun and the caliber except one thing. It's expensive to shoot. I'd hate to give it up but if I was limited to one caliber I'd have to go 9mm. Ammo's cheaper and more plentiful and there are so many more platforms that can fire it. As long as I don't need my pistol to defend myself against grizzly bears I can get by just fine with 9mm.

  10. If they were to ban all military and police calibers? 10mm for its versatility.

Other than that, I think I would go .40, since the ammo is easier to come by. Then again, during the present shortage I went to Cabelas and 10mm was the only ammo I could find.

    Ahh....decisions....decisions.

I suppose if I was to be "that guy", I could say my one caliber would be .45.

    .45 Auto
    .45 Colt
    .454 Casull
    .45-70

    ...and so on.

When you throw in the "XXX ammo is more available" it changes the parameters of the OP's question, since the availability of ammo was not part of the equation.

So if we're into that territory I'd still go with the G-32/.357sig but in the new, expanded availability of ammo scenario I would also have G-23 and aftermarket 9mm barrels and requisite magazines that would give me three caliber options if I had to scrounge for ammo.

.22LR if I have to carry all my stuff, .45 ACP if I'm hunkered down is one location.
