It is what I wanted (almost) for my next AR, a Colt A2, 20in. But the guy chopped it to 16.5 and moved the sight and gas block.

It is an A2 Colt lower and receiver, barrel has no roll marks. BCG has a D roll mark, not C.

For the great price I got it for, I figured I could just just buy a 20in barrel and gas tube and replace what he did.

The gun has the old style feed ramps, short and shallow, for the full size M16. I had no idea 20in barrel are harder to locate then a hooker in church. (In some cases, full uppers from the off-brand guys are nearly the same price as some expensive barrels! ArmAlite has a NICE 20in! if you can pay...)

Looks like he also buggered the gas tube and retaining pin. There is a lot of gas blow back/fouling under the hand guards near the sight.

The gun only cycles Win 55gr brass cased (3250 FPS) all steel cased ammo failed to cycle (will not pick up next round. Case is ejected perfectly)

I tried various brands of 40gr, 50, 52, 55, 62, 69 and 77. Only the Win 55gr cycle 100% reliably and it was accurate too.

(All of these cycle perfectly in my DPMS M4. The 69 match is incredibly accurate!)

So what are my best options?

Sell the Colt receiver and step-child barrel and buy 20in upper?

Find a 20in barrel (where?) and hope for the best?

I just want an accurate Colt A2, 20in. It was always my favorite M16 in the service.

I could skip the A2 for now and just go right to my #3 AR, the long range varmint in 24in. (I have seen some nice uppers out there!)

    Jim,

Bushmaster sells a 20" A2 Government profile barrel assembly for $235 Normal Bushy barrels are 1-9 twist but years ago--before they were sold-- I called and they had 1-7 barrels in stock as well.

    http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=7

I sold that gun about 6 months ago but it was a good shooter.

    Thx.

They even list a 20in Nation Match for a reasonable price.

I am also going to talk to my guns smith and see what he recommends.

Sounds like you got a Colt lower with a bubba'd upper. The D-marked BCG is likely a DPMS.

Not really sure how the original owner moved the FSB on a 20" gun, as 16.5" would still put the muzzle well past the rifle-length gas port. Either you have a very long, permanent flash hider you failed to mention, or the barrel isn't the original 20".

looking at it I'd say the barrel is not original, it is threaded for flash or whatever.. I think he reused the sight and gas tube, but failed to do it right.

I am wondering now if the current barrel can be fixed by removing the sight, cleaning or replacing the gas tube and locktite it all down.

If the tube or block is buggered (as I suspect because of the marks near the tube pin and extra hammer marks, looks like a monkey with bad eye sight had a go at it)

    Something to try tomorrow.

I also found one on gunbroker, but yours is better deal.

I am going to pull the trigger on it and sell my "bubba" upper as is.

I'm very happy with the one I got from there. You'll need to get a forward assist assembly, which takes about one minute to install.

Brownells had the colt FA parts in stock, so I sprung for them. (2x what other brands go for)

I received the A2 upper Thursday, fit and finish is great. I has an FNMI barrel. The forward assist was a breeze to install.

Due to my schedule, I won't get to shoot it until either late today or Tuesday morning.

I have the Colt/bubba upper for sale locally. If I get the price I am asking ($350, I known, but a boy can dream) I will put it toward a match rifle.

If not, I will take it apart and mess with the gas system and find the feeding issue. (tube could be dinged from a poor reinstall?)

One of the old guys who came to look it was very knowledgeable about Colts and he thinks it is a full Colt upper with a Colt barrel that has been cut down to 16.5 and machined 1/2x28. (He really wants a heavy barrel A2, or mine for $275, I said pass.)

He had a original Colt A2 with him to compare with. 1969 gun in great shape. He bought it in 1978(?), for $300. Jealous..

Mine has a hooded National Match sight, not the original A2 style. (I could not find a good picture of those sights anywhere, until yesterday. NM for sure)

The more I mess with it. the more likely I am to keep it!

As soon as my GI sling gets here, I will be happy. 2 for $16 from sportsman guide.
