I believe that situational awareness and mindset are very important when discussing self-defense. I will not speak for everyone, but I know my mind tends to wander when I am out and about and enough attention to my environment is not always paid.

Can you offer any tips on how to train oneself to pay better attention to our surroundings? On a related note, for what should we be watching? What warning signs should we be seeking?

I would much rather avoid an issue than survive one.

Best advice I can give: become a people-watcher. Take a few moments to appreciate the scenery/architecture/whatever of whatever spot you might be in. It's a beautiful world out there. While you're drinking it all in, you'll become more aware of discordant signals around you.

In the same sense that a trained guard dog is simply at a high level of obedience training, tactical awareness is simply a high level of people-watching and studying your surroundings.
