    My sister is staying w/ me right now because she's having some personal issues, and she was on the phone with one of her friends who was apparently having problems with her new laptop and getting wireless working. So in the course of our conversation, we discover(after I told her to read the letter from AT&T), that her service is not active yet..lol. So then she starts asking me where she can buy Microsoft. I said, Microsoft what. She said Windows. I said well it sounds like you have some version of Windows, do you have XP or Vista, she says, well, I bought the laptop with no software so that it was cheaper... After really asking some basic questions, by "Microsoft" she was referring to MS Office..

    I'm gonna go pour me some whiskey.

    I feel your pain. I've been trying to help my MIL with her connectivity issues all week. The woman really shouldn't own any technology more complicated than an analog wristwatch IMO.

    My mom's firefox has a dozen different toolbars embedded in it now, she says its just "easier to click yes than read what they want to install"

    *sigh* tell me about it. I'm sure we all have countless stories. The worst ones are when they try to explain the problem but come no where near it. :crying:

    Client: The computer won't print
    Me: It doesn't print anything at all? Is it making noises?
    Client: No, it doesn't do anything
    Me: Ok, this may sound stupid...but can you check to see if its plugged in for me?
    Client: Ok, hold on I'm going to have to put the phone down.
    (Hearing rustling noises...and then windows picking up the printer...and then paper being fed.)
    Client: It works now, thank you
    Me: No problem

    You think real tech support is bad, try working at a walmart electronics department and being expected to solve problems over the phone. Or the stuff we would see in person. I once opened a VCR that smelled of urine and had roaches in it.

    I got a call once:
    Client: My computer won't come on.
    Me: No lights, no noise?
    Client: No
    Me: Is it plugged In?
    Client: Yes, into an outlet strip
    Me: Is the outlet strip plugged in?
    Client: Yes

    So I drive to the client site (30 miles - this is the boonies)
    She was correct, the outlet strip was plugged in-- to the outlet strip.

    Or then there was the time my boss actually wanted to know if his new laptop would be LIGHTER if he deleted some files.

    Or then when accounting called and c/o their hard drive being full. I knew she was a new hire and inherited a well used computer. I told her to delete files she didn't need anymore, like old memos. She calls back 20 minutes later, now it won't boot. It seems she no longer "needed" msdos.sys, io.sys or any of those pesky files at root.

    Why be mean and denigrate folks who don't know what we know? :headscratch:

    I'm pretty sure that all of us can be put in a situation where we know little and can be made to look like absolute dunces.

    How about getting a call asking if our phone system was still working? :shocked:

    An employee bought Office 2003 to install on her home PC. She asked if it would wipe out XP. :dunno:

    A few years ago an employee asked me to look at his company owned laptop, it was acting funny. Upon investigation it appeared that one of the arrow keys was stuck down. He said he tried to take them off and clean them with acetone but it didn't help. As I started looking deeper into the issue, I noticed a strange, sour smell. Yep, beer. I asked him about it and he claims his cat must have done it while opening the can. :upeyes:

    Another said he couldn't get to any of the network drives on his laptop. I ask if his network cable is hooked up. He replied "Do I need to?". He has been her for a few years at this point.

    After multiple, monthly dis infections of my BIL's PC I tell him to stay off the porn sites. "I don't got to any, they just pop up". Yeah OK. :rofl:

    I had a salesman ask me that too!

    It can drive you insane, especially if you have to deal with the same people, having the same issues every day, hell I’ve called them worse than that … just not out loud.



    Years ago when I worked in an office I once received a call from a bean counter in our finance department complaining that they could not print. When something failed to print they would resend it, there were dozens of jobs in the queue waiting to print. After I looked at the printer, I cleaned out the print queue and walked away telling them to put PAPER in the printer … :whistling:

    I have 0 problem with people that are ignorant, they can be taught. It's the people that can't think for themselves or follow simple instructions that give me grief. And yes, plugging an outlet strip into itself and expecting it to work qualifies as both ignorant and stupid.

    i cant tell you how many times i've been told that their CPU wasnt working, could they bring it in?
    they meant the computer, not the processor.

    I regularly get calls from my mother asking me how to make rules in Outlook. I just got one last week, and it had been about 3 months since the last one. When I worked at MS we had countless videos of people that we put in the "fishbowls" to do usability testing who would flip out. I think they must have forgotten that they had a camera on them on all sides in order to gauge reactions, and boy did they have some. I remember one distinctly where an Asian lady was screaming and yelling at the two-way mirror in the room and probably swearing in her native language. Some people understand technology, and some don't. It's the ones that don't that are fun to watch. :cool:

    LOL, I bet mac corp would love to have those videos of people testing out MS apps.

    As an aside: MIL brought computer back today and I found out that from the time her computer left here and arrived at her house last Sunday, Norton decided to block all connections on port 80. I love Norton.

    He command of english was limited. Her command of DOS was nonexistent.

    We have this one guy who seriously thinks he is a power user. He still uses Office Xp because he knows ALL the "power tips" for it and doesn't want to upgrade. Every few months he brings his laptop to me asking "Is the server down?" because Outlook won't send or receive. I explain that the 2GB PST file limit is still in effect and empty his deleted items. He has every piece of spam he's ever received, and when he sends anyone else a message he copies himself and requests read receipts (so he can legally "prove" they got the mail :upeyes: ), and he keeps every step in an email conversation, even though it's being repeated every time. And of course he keeps all his attachments, both ways (for court...).

    And I don't suppose it would surprise you that he thinks putting his name (in his five line sig block) in a script font makes it a legal signature. ;)

    Yeah, they just wouldn't like the videos of MS techs easily crashing the Mac OS. And to be fair, most of the software that they were testing was pre-alpha stuff and more often than not it was with test subjects who were (I'll put this as nicely as possible) tech-retarded. A good portion of MS time is spent trying (unsucessfully) to create a UI that anyone can use. MS and MAC both share the same problems. EGO and price gouging. MS rapes you for it's bloated OS, and Mac rapes you for it's hardware of yesteryear... Brand loyalty is a dead end street...except for Glock of course.:supergrin:
