A local radio host asked this question today and people called in like crazy. So, if you could do ONE thing what would it be?

Me, I'd limit voting to people with skin in the game.

For sure no one on entitlements can vote.

Maybe also restrict voting to property owners, people who have an earned income, people who can pass a civics test, or people who at least volunteer a certain number of hours in their community.

No matter what happens, if we don't fix the education system, no one will ever know why it happened and it will repeat.

    Yeah, all that! ^^^

And, welfare lasts one year and you WORK while getting it...cleaning parks, roadways, something. NO babies while on the dole. Benefits are REDUCED if you get knocked up. Piss test for EVERY check.

Work or starve. (I guess that would be my "one thing" boiled down to it's essence)

First I'd make myself the Supreme Ruler of the United States for life with unlimited power.

    Then I'd go to work.

Make people responsible for their actions.
Most of the countries problems come down to a major lack of responsiblity on the part of the citizens.

    No career politicians.

One term limits for all offices.

Scrap the tax code and institute a floating flat tax of no less than 10% or more than 15%. No deductions. No welfare brood-mares getting more than what they contribute. No exceptions. Everybody pays.

By a floating flat tax I mean a flat tax that can only be raised by Congress to pay for a defined national emergency. The tax increase will have a time limit of 1 year from date of enactment then it expires and will have to be revisited by Congress to keep in place depending on circumstances. No national emergency, no tax increase and the rate defaults to it's lowest setting.

I'm going to assume in this made up world I don't have to worry about where the resources came from to complete this one task so I will say pay off the national debt

Abolishing the IRS would be a GREAT start. Fairtax.org

Take home your entire paycheck...minus voluntary deductions.

Just imagine the bump to the economy.

Can you even believe how fast the politicians will start massive spending, and how much money will be thrown at pork and buying votes, if there is no debt to start with.

Even the pretense of caring about fiscal problems would be gone. We would be so screwed so fast.

Doesn't matter how many times you pay it off if you don't get rid of the credit card...

Constitutional amendment with a balanced budget provision and some sort of a flat tax provision.

If they want more welfare programs, they'll have to publicly vote for a tax increase on everyone.

Unfortunately there is so much wrong with this country, any ONE thing wouldn't save it. No matter what it was.

To add to what others have posted already though, I would say to bring our jobs back home.

Stop this outsourcing BS and give us the chance to PROVE that we are able and willing to do the jobs that we SUPPOSEDLY aren't willing to do. Illegal immigrants need not apply.
