Anyone ever try one of those ice cream balls that you can take camping?

Add the stuff in the middle chamber with ice and salt on the outer chamber.

Move it around for 20 min or so and you have ice cream?

thinking about getting one for camping.

  2. One of the dads in our scout troop brought one along a couple of years ago.

His son thought he remembered how to make ice cream in it and took charge of making the ice cream.

After about half an hour of shaking the ball it still wasn't frozen. His dad said that he probably didn't put enough salt in it. So they opened it up and poured in a bunch more salt. And they went back to shaking it some more.

After another 20 minutes they opened it up again and it still wasn't frozen. One of the boys stuck his finger in the ice cream mix to taste it and screamed "yuck" Seems the boy in charge had poured the rock salt in with the milk mixture instead of with the ice. Then added even more when it didn't work.:rofl:

I've been around when one has been used on 2 other occasions and they worked just fine.

You can do the same things with 2 zip-lock freezer bags (actually, those slide-locks are better) and a pair of winter gloves.

You WILL need the gloves. It's shocking how cold that bag gets.

    Cost: $1.

Making icecream in 2 ziplock bags - priceless.

(In our next episode, we will make eggs and bacon in a paper bag over an open flame. Be sure to tune in!. . . and yes, it CAN be done.)
