Iams Partners With Leading Anti-Hunting Organization(01/09)

The Iams Company, maker of Iams and Eukanuba pet foods, has joined forces with the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest anti-hunting organization.

The company is helping sponsor the Pet Fest America tour, a series of animal shows in major metropolitan areas, nationwide. The shows were developed by HSUS. They debuted in early 2003 and will continue through April 2004.

“Sportsmen, and in particular sporting dog owners, understand the threat HSUS poses to hunting, field trialing and other activities,” said Bud Pidgeon, president of the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance. “Iams has fallen into the same trap as some other businesses and it needs to be educated.”

Companies such as General Mills, Accor Hotels, Pet Safe, Sears, and Ace Hardware ended relationships with HSUS after thousands of sportsmen levied strong protest.

“The Pet Fests are basically pet owner education and welfare events and also serve to educate and entertain consumers,” Kelly Vanasse, Iams associate director of external affairs told the Alliance. “We also sponsor Ducks Unlimited, AKC and other events. We try to strike a balance.”

Iams clearly doesn’t understand how sportsmen will view its support for the nation’s largest anti-hunting organization.

“We are currently fighting HSUS attempts to ban dove hunting in Wisconsin, bear hunting in Maine and Alaska, and other anti-hunting threats around the country,” said Pidgeon. “Iams is adding legitimacy to HSUS’s efforts.”

The National Animal Interest Alliance was among those who alerted the Alliance of the issue.

Take Action! Sportsmen across the nation should contact Iams and educate them about HSUS’s goals to end hunting, fishing, trapping and other forms of animal use. Contact President Jeffery P. Ansell, The Iams Company, 7250 Poe Ave., Dayton, OH 45414. Phone (937) 898-7387. Fax (937) 264-7264. Toll Free (800) 675-3849.

    letter sent.

Here's what I wrote, in relevant part:

First, some background. I am an attorney, a cat owner, and have used Iams products in the past. I was recently thinking of switching back to Iams for my ageing cats (for various reasons), but have decided to avoid using your products for the following reason.

It has come to my attention that Iams is supporting the Humane Society of the US, which is currently engaged in efforts to restrict the rights of hunters in this country. I am not a hunter, but as an avid fisherman and all-around outdoorsman I strongly support those who choose to lawfully hunt various game. Hunters are among the true stewards of the natural world, as they more fully understand the complex interrelationships of the denizens of the forest.

Word of your support of HSUS is spreading across the internet on various forums dedicated to hunting, shooting, fishing, and other outdoor pursuits. Countless outdoorsmen such as myself have already decided to either avoid your products, or stop using them as long as you support the HSUS.

I ask that you reconsider your position. Until that time, I will refrain from using your products, and will so advise all with whom I share a common love of the outdoors.

    Yours very truly,
    (etc.)

Ahhhhhhhh, just in time for this weekend too. The only things our trained ferocious ankle biters hunt are non family members on our property, and they're good at it. ;Y I'm shopping this weekend, and will remember this stuff is now on my NO!! list.

...in today's email: Short answer is, they are just trying to reach a big audience to sell their product, didn't want to start anything, and they are keeping their sponsorship.

    Dear Roger:

We appreciate that you have been feeding your dogs and cats our Iams foods and
we thank you for helping us to understand the issue regarding Iams involvement
with Petfest America. We were not aware of these concerns when we decided to get
involved with this event-we were focusing on reaching pet owners.

Though our response to you is consistent with the response sent to others who
have contacted us, I want you to know that we are taking note of each
    individual's comments.

The Iams Company is sponsoring Petfest America with the HSUS to educate and
entertain pet owners throughout the United States. These six events will help
bring pet care and nutrition information, as well as the Iams Superdogs, a
world-class agility group, to thousands of pet lovers throughout the country.

In addition to Petfest, we are present at a variety of events throughout the
year in an effort to educate and entertain concerned pet owners on the
incredible difference superior nutrition can make in their pets-helping them
live long, healthy lives. Some of these events include the ESPN Great Outdoor
Games, the Master National Hunt Test-plus various national specialties, agility
events, humane society walks and various dog and cat shows. We work with a wide
variety of pet-interested groups to try to get our message to every dog and cat
owner so they can understand the positive role that nutrition can play in their
    pets' lives.

Again, I appreciate you contacting us and giving us an opportunity to
respond-and hope this gives you an understanding of our position on involvement
in events, in general. In the end, our reason for being is focused on the dog
and cat. We try to reach their owners where they are most receptive to hearing
our message....from sporting to non-profit events.

    Sincerely,
    Tina

    Roger C,

That is because upstanding people like you send them emails pointing out their hypocracies. I bet if I sent them an email saying I was very anti pet use for hunting, I would get a much different reply. ;)

Thanks for the heads up. HSUS is not one of my favorite organizations. I am a veterinarian and I sent them a negative email letter about their associations. Maybe they will listen and choose to associate with groups that are friends to pet owners, sportsmen, pet food manufacturers, food animal producers, etc who are all anathema to HSUS's ultimate goals. Then again, maybe not.

It's another form letter, but at least they heard us. Next the the weenies in the board room are looking into the next promotional idea, they may remember, "oh, yeah, we got a lot of negative mail on that one last year.....". They are a business, and really just care about how to sell more product. If they think the HSUS event will get them more negative attention than new sales, they may drop it next time. If not, then we all just keep at it...

i switched to nutro years ago. it's much better for dogs than Iams and doesn't contain by products, which can be anything from tumors to hair, hooves, and feathers. it's meat and certin grains. plus it also has vitamin c for an antioxidant and glucosamine for healthy joints. screw Iams. i forgot to mention Bil-jac is another excellent food for dogs

It has been awhile since this all went down, but I just recieved another e-mail from Iams. It sounds like they ruffled a few feathers with their HSUS sponsorship, and are trying to set things straight. Here is the e-mail...

    Dear Dog Enthusiast:

You recently contacted us regarding our affiliation with the HSUS. We'd like
to thank you for taking the time to express your concern as well as update
you on a recent decision made by our organization.

The Iams Company will not be funding the Petfest America events with HSUS
again next year. We appreciate all of the direct feedback we have received
from the dog community and apologize for the frustration that this
sponsorship has caused. We have a lot of exciting innovations planned next
year, which will require our focused time and resources.

As a leader in the pet industry, The Iams Company is about educating all pet
owners on pet health care and nutrition - from the family pet to the active
competitor. We are definitely pro-dog and clearly not anti-hunting. We look
forward to continuing our long history of support of the sporting dog
community and leadership in the industry with innovative research to improve
the health and well-being of athletic dogs. We hope that we can put this
behind us and focus on the future -- great performing foods for great
    performing dogs.
