Man, that's a beauty! Awsome bluing. I'd still shoot it with mid-power 240's every day, twice on July 4TH.

    Is that a 5" barrel?

I stoped by the local indoor range on the way home from work today and they had a used 629 full lug with a 7" or 7.5" barrel. It looked to be in pretty good shape, but it did feel a bit long.
They also had a 629 to rent with a 5" barrel, but the only ammo they had in stock was some hunting rounds at $35 for a box of 20. They said they would be getting in some less expensive ammo by the middle of next week, so I'll probably stop back in and put 50 down range to see how I like it. It felt a little short just holding it.

So I'm thinking a 6" may be the way to go, but we'll see.

    Thanks again guy's. :wavey:

Since it seems that this has evolved into a "Show us your S&W N-frames" thread, here's my 4" 29-3....

    Very nice

The 29 is a much more classy gun than the 629 could ever hope to be.

That's what I was getting at with the full lug (classic) and half lug. Only full lug 3" barrels have full ejector rods. Love my 686+. A 4" 629 classic is nice because you get a minute amount of extra weight where it counts. I don't have a 4" HL but if I were to go back when I got my 3", I'd go with the 4". The 5" does'nt feel short at all. It's about perfect and handles & looks much like a 4" L-frame. It's a win-win decision so don't worry, no bad choices.

  9. The .44 Magnum is a gun with plenty of carisma.

The long M629 is a Classic Hunter but I find the Ruger SRH to be a really good shooter.

Can anyone tell me if a Warne scope base will fit a new S&W model 29?

Regarding my 5", it would have to be drilled and tapped by a smith to attach a base or scope. It doesn't come set up that way on the 5".

I have the 629 with 8 3/8 inch barrel. with 2x Leupold scope mounted with Weaver rings. I like the longer barrels for the velocity and recoil reduction. With 24.0 grains of H110/296 I am getting around 1350 fps with 240 grain bullets Sierra or Hornady. Longer barrels have less muzzle blast and more velocity. IMO short barrels may be handy but you pay the price with performance reduction. Muzzle brakes are really loud.

I love mine. It shoots so nice for especially for being such a powerful gun. 629 Classic 5" Unfluted barrel. Here is mine. Since then, i have replaced the grips with a set of Ahrends, but these rubber grips are better for long range sessions.

Ok, I went to the range today and rented a 629 with a 5" barrel, and shot Fiocchi 200 grs. JHP.

    I LIKE IT! :pepper:

So after going around in circles trying to figure out wich model to get, I have narrowed it down to two. Either a 629 6" model #163606, or a model 29 in 6.5" blue.

The local guy I go to says he can get me the 629 for $799, or the model 29 for $999.
