As far as firearms go, this is really cheap. It even ships free.

I just discovered there is an FFL in the industrial park that I pass every day on my way home from work. It's literally only 2 blocks out of my way so I stopped to see him today.

He's a Bud's preferred FFL and he charges $25 for the transfer.

So now I'm talking myself into the Mosin because:

    1. It's a historical artifact.
    2. It's a not so rare collectors item.
    3. It's a collectors item you can actually shoot without severely hurting the value.
    4. It's a good way to see how easy it is to do a transfer with this FFL, without risking a lot of money.

    Negatives -
    1. I don't have room in my safe. I'll have to take the air rifle out to make room.
    2. I will spend money on ammo.

Looks like I've convinced myself, logically, that I should buy it.

    Anyone, besides my wife, disagree?

Get your 03 C&R FFL, it's $30 for 3 years and you could have this mailed to your door without any transfer fees.

    http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2005/howtogetyourcurionrelicffl03/index.asp

Your first purchase would cover the transfer fee you have now and you have the rest of the three years to buy without fees. Saves money in the long run, and gives you the chance to build your collection.

Go for it. I have bought several guns from bud's, with the Mosins I like to buy where I can see what i'm getting i.e. which plant it was made and if the #'s match. If it's just a shooter and you don't care, then there all good. Rich with history. Your negatives: you don't need a safe, hang it on the wall, and lock up the ammo. and as far as ammo goes, it's cheap. Beware, you can't own just one.

DO IT! Mosins are so much fun its ridiculous. Surplus ammo is cheap and available and a hoot to shoot. Brings a huge smile to my face every time its goes BANG!

    DO IT!
    DO IT!
    DO IT!
    DO IT!

Also showing up to the range with a bayonet on the end of the mosin gets some priceless looks.

Center Balanced Systems makes a cool bullpup kit for it, but I'm not a fan of bolt action bullpups.

i don't know why ammo is a negative. ammo is still pretty cheap compared to most centerfire rifle rounds i was paying $80 for 440 locally and i'm sure you could find a better price online

Do it now! Prices on these guns just keeps going up. Honestly when I bought mine I paid about $110. I can't find any for less than $150ish range now. And a couple years before I bought mine they could typically be found for less than $100.

My apologies to anyone offended by this comment. I had a MN, but quickly lost interest in it. It is a part of history, and they are cheap......those are redeeming qualities.

My thinking is, it's like getting a Taurus, when there are a whole lot better things to get.

I bought the carbine version for 80 bucks several years ago. I'd grab one while there's enough supply to keep them such a steal, as far as the price goes.

I've had 5 of them sold em all dumped my C&R I'm over it, but they are fun, but that's about all they are good for is fun shooting.
Dumped my C&R because I didn't want to be on a list when NSA comes knocking, trying to be as invisible as I can when it comes to guns, everything I have is legal and I want to stay that way...
