I've been using Mandrake 10.1 for just over a month now. I have to say, I love Linux!!!

The only thing that I am not able to do that I was before is watch DVD's on my laptop. For some reason Xine won't play more than about 3 seconds of my DVDs before the program crashes. Not that I watch many DVD's on my laptop anyway.

I love how there is no spyware!
    I love how I don't need anti-virus
KDE with multiple desktops makes using the computer easier
It manages memory better and is much faster switching programs
    OpenOffice works great
    It's free!!!!!

My next computer will be an Apple... but for now Linux is the way to go!

I would try mplayer for all your movie needs. It even has a nice GUI "gmplayer" and is a lot like the Mac programs. Linux has really come a long way in the last 5 years. Good luck!

Linux is a great OS. There is no spyware... that I am aware of. However, don't fool yourself into thinking you don't need antivirus software. There are viruses for linux, just not as many. Check out f-prot for an antivirus program.

I just installed Mandrakelinux 10.2 beta 1.Okay Beta is not for everybody and I have had problems with Mandrake betas in the past but this is the best OS they've ever had.In 10.1 I had some crashes playing videos when using KDE.In Mandrake without KDE you give up some good programs but in 10.1 Gnome is more stable.cd4 has KDE 3.3.0 and its less stable than the standard 3.2.3.The new KDE 3.3.2 in 10.2 is excellent.Gnome is 2.8.1 and the 2.6.10 is the fastest Linux kernel I've used.10.1 Community came with kernel 2.6.8.10 and 10.1 Official has kernel 2.6.8.12.

I haven't had any stability issues with 10.1 or KDE 3.2.

How long before 10.2 comes out? I know that 10.1 just came out in December. Hopefully I can "upgrade" to 10.2 when the time comes instead of re-installing!

One of these days I'm going to install Linux on my desktop machine (AMD 1700+). Then I want to get FTP going on that machine so I can access my music from anywhere. For now, I just don't let it access the internet.

I finally gave up windows when I realized that my firewalls, anti-spyware, and anti-virus programs (I had 10 of those put together) did not catch everything and just gave me a false sense of security.

Mandrake 10.1 looks to be Mandrake 10.0 with a newer kernel.I had problems with 10.1 beta. This 10.2 beta is problem free so far and is fast.KDE 3.3.2 has been changed to respond faster too.

Thinking of playing with OPEN VPN.
