With regards to the leather holster you use for your main carry gun...

    Three choices:

    1. If you hold the holster upside-down the gun falls out.
    2. If you hold the holster upside-down and you shake it up and down the gun falls out.
    3. If you hold the holster upside-down and you shake it the gun never comes out.

Also, generally speaking, how tight do you require your leather holsters to be?

Mine have a retention strap with a thumb release (Blackhawk 3 slot pancake). So it falls under 3.

None of my leather holsters have had a thumb snap and only a single one of them was a 2. All the rest are 3.

I got rid of the 2.

I give a couple of light shakes. If the gun doesn't come out with that, I'm satisfied. Oh, and no straps, retention from holster/gun fit only.

For IWB I don't care how loose it is. The belt takes care of the retention...option 1 for me.

Simply Rugged Tribute for GP100: Retention strap

Galco COP 3 slot for G21SF: 3. Retention strap

Galco COP 3 slot for G19: Retention strap

Otherwise they vary between 2 and 3.

I must have 50-70 leather holsters in the house, maybe more. All different.

IWB I don't even worry about it. When I tighten down my belt the gun isn't going anywhere.

OWB is pretty much the same.

How secure the holster is when worn is not necessarily the same as when it is not.

In my opinion it is a dumb test.

    Regards,
    Happyguy :)

Cannot give an answer as I've yet to find someone willing to hold me upside down while wearing my holstered firearm.

The main thing to consider is if you can easily draw the gun when wearing the holster, and be able to go about your business without the gun coming out of the holster.

Holding a holster upside down doesn't tell you anything, it's how it performs when you're wearing it that matters. I've had a lot of IWB holsters and IME, most of them are built with too much retention.

I like to carry with a holster that I'm comfortable using in an IDPA match or a training class. If I can't even use it for training and practicing/playing, why would I want to use it to save my bacon?

2.5 - doesn't move with light shake upside down. Fine for me.

Bingo. Retention will often tighten up when you strap the holster on. But in a "free" state my leather holsters are #2. Good thing to do with any new piece of gear is to roll around on the floor with it a bit and see what happens.
