Money that is... I'm looking at different career options, and considering something I might enjoy more vs something ill make more money doing. So that's the question: how much money is enough for YOUR family for a year?

    Expenses and lifestyles are variable.

As long as it's not something you'll hate, take the money. There's never "enough" because life is unpredictable.

PS: I make in the low-to-mid six figures and saving for retirement keeps me up at night. I certainly make "enough" to fund my current lifestyle, I don't live extravagantly at all, but I worry a lot about paying for college for my kids and retirement for myself.

Do not worry, his majesty Obama will decide for you how much is enough. If you are in his cabal then you can have as much as you want... otherwise you are an evil person and must pay MORE to those less fortunate.

Hopefully, your career doesn't have much to do with math.

I'm guessing you are looking at sales or marketing type careers.

I make a third of what I did twenty years ago living in Manhattan than I do here in rural Montana. Guess where I am happier... HH

Because a teenager and sales/marketing guy would ask the question like you did.

An adult and person who knows math knows the amount is determined by a number of different variables.

Do you know what those variables are?

The degree I'm looking at is all math, I realize there are many variables. That's why I asked how much is enough for YOUR family. I am a teenager, and the reason I started this thread is because I've personally seen too many people struggle finically to be comfortable. I don't want to end up like any of them. I don't live by myself or on my own yet, so no, I don't know all the variables.

I didn't ask you if you realized there are many variables.

Welcome to the beginning of life. Unless you are in the top .05% of the world for intelligence you are going to start at the bottom and have to work your way up. Sucks, but we all have to pay our dues.

What leads to success are a multitude of things and what dooms a family to fiscal struggles are poor choices and a drastic change in currency valuation combined with taxation.

You are not going to start off making big bones right away. That is a very rare occurrence in the real world.

How much is enough? Depends on how you want to live. The best advice I can give is to work a few years decide what you want to do and be the best at it. Or better yet join the military and travel for a few years while you figure life out.

    Seriously?

With that attitude, you've got a long hard life ahead of you.

Make as much money as you can. You are far, far from being in the position to make a decision like the one you think you are faced with. You don't choose what you're going to do at the beginning of college.
