How do I get a stuck filter off a lens?

I have a UV filter stuck on one of my lenses, and I can't budge it. I've applied as much force as I feel I can without breaking the lens. (It caused a good deal of flex in the lens barrel.) I've tried just about everything else short of soaking it in break-free to try and loosen the threads.

Does anyone have any practical ways of getting this thing off. My next recourse is to send it in to Canon and let them take care of it.

It's a Canon 28-135 USM IS. Pretty much the best lens I have right now, so I'm a little miffed that I managed to do this.

You need to extend the barrel as far as possible, max zoom or min focus, wrap your weak hand thumb/forefinger around the Extended barrel and grip tightly. Take a chamois or some such in the strong hand and grip ONLY the filter and twist off. It is most probably stuck on because the threads are dirty, however it may be bent or have damaged threads.

Thanks! That worked. It looks like I had some sand in the threads. (Probably from my last trip to El Paso.)
