How did the custom to hold the rifle or shotgun by the barrel and put it on the shoulder started??? Is completely foolish!!! I have seen a lot of people in TV doing it.

I think Jeff Cooper attributed it to African hunters who do not routinely 'hangup"use slings for fear of having some sort of 'hang up" while dealing with an irritated critter at close range. When ont in danger of immediate need the guns are carried by their "bearers" who are little trained in firearms safety.
