How desperate are car dealers to sell SUV's?

I've seen ads in the paper for SUV's for REALLY low prices. My local dealer has row upon row upon row of full sized SUV's and I'm wondering if I could get one at a really bargain price, or if the ads are just c'mons.

    Opinions?

Dealers should be very eager to sell off remaining '05 models, what are you looking at?

I'm looking at Ford Explorers. I have one now and it's the best car I've ever owned.

Overall SUV sales have been hurt from higher gas prices.

Very similar to the car sales in the 70's after the first oil embargo. You could pick up muscle cars, luxury cars, etc for chump change. Unfortunately, I couldn't even afford chump change back then. :(

I wandered onto the dealers lot yesterday while they were closed. Alas, nothing but 06 Explorers. I was hoping to find an 05, so I could wrestle a really good deal, but no luck. Oh well. ;g

Dealers were desperate enought that at the height of the gas price hysteria earlier this year, I bought a "like new" 2004 Suburban 4wd Z71 with every option available, and only 24K miles for $26K...

The truck is a "dream" to drive, haul the boat to the lake with etc...

    It has:

    -4WD
    -Leather
    -Tow Package
    -Tri Zone climate control
    -XM radio
    -Quad buckets
    -DVD and wireless headphones
    -6 disc premium sound
    -Sunroof
    -heated seats

It also gets 17-20 mpg, which is about what my Ford Explorer got, but it 3 times the vehicle..

I know that 26K may still sound like a lot of money to some, but consider that the MSRP for this vehicle was $47K 12 months prior..

I am EXTREMELY jealous! That was a genius purchase! May I ask if you had the car examined by a mechanic prior to buying it? I have bought two used cars, both had major mechanical issues.;1

No, I did not. However, I am not exactly a slouch in the garage, and I covered all the bases myself that the average mechanic would cover..

Before I went to see the truck, I actually did some research using the vin# supplied in the ad before purchase, and determined who previously owned it, and it's service history through Chevy.

I then called the dealer, and asked him who previously owned it. He told me the guy who owned it, owns a group of dealerships, gets a new vehicle for him and his wife every 1-2 yrs and that he believed that this particular vehicle was the guy's wife's car..

As soon as I hung up, I immediately called the previous owner, and his story jived with the car dealer's story, that it was his wife's, had never even been in 4wd, or towed anything and the worst thing I might find is a french fry under the seat from his kids...

Funny thing is, I did find a french fry under the seat...;f

Anyway, we've already been on 2 good vacations, towed my 20' skiboat several thousand miles and the last road trip was up to the ski resort, using 4wd.

Other than a finicky rear window switch, no problems at all..

Yeah, but if you drive it any, you're gonna be putting $250/month in it for fuel alone!
