    If it was a "gift" to him to buy a car, then would he have to claim it? Seems that they messed up by calling it a tip.

    I thought you could give a yearly gift total of $10,000 and less and it not be taxed? I'm sure if that is true then the IRS will argue this was a tip/wage and get some of it.

    Gift tax, if any, is paid by the donor, not the recipient.

    Correct. Cash... he would have to self-report it. If a tip is added to a bill paid with a charge card, the restaurant will show it on the 1099.

    I absolutely love livin' in a world where things like this happen. It helps me balance out all the meanness, cruelty and senseless violence we have in out society these days. I'm really happy for that guy. He seems like the kind of person that I like to see good things happen to.
