South East Texas guys help a brother out please.

My son has a medical school interview tomorrow and Friday at UT Galveston. Getting to Galveston is straight forward.

However, the interview ends at 3:30 PM Friday in Galveston. My son wants see some buddies at A&M Friday night and Saturday.

Leaving Galveston at 3:30 what's a good route-plan in order to get to College Station quickly.

    1. Floor it and go up the gut on I-45 and pray to beat the worst of Friday rush-hour and cut over at Conroe or north of there?
    2. Somehow wind around to the southwest, west and then north of Houston?

Given the departure time I think he is screwed and it'll take forever no matter which route he takes.

    Ideas?

I-45 north to beltway 8, AKA Sam Houston Tollway, go west on the toll road to northwest side of town. Take 290 northwest to Hempstead. Take hwy 6 north to College station.

    This.

Bring coins for the Toll. It is quicker to toss and drive.

45 to 290 on the 8 is expensive... More than $5... Have him take about $10 in quarters JIC.

He has an NTTA Tolltag. Either Tolltags work on Houston's tollroads or I've been breaking the law for years.

Yes, the NTTA tag is good to go on the EZTag lane.

Oh yea. How's the construction on 45 north of Houston right now? Last time I drove through there - maybe three months ago - it wasn't too bad at all. Kiddo will drive south on 45 to Galveston from Dallas.

I think Conroe has some construction but between the Woodlands and downtown it is pretty good. What time is he coming through?

He should hit Conroe tomorrow about 2:00 PM. His interview starts with a social mixer in Galveston at 6:30.

Thanks for the info. it's greatly appreciated.

    Yup!

As someone that grew up in Houston, and went to A&M, this is the only path you should take.

We thought about Southwesting him to Hobby and he could rent a car etc. But his A&M visit on the way back foiled that plan plus he's not coming back to Dallas on return. You get the picture.

There are some circumstances and traffic situations I've experienced in Houston that would make me wonder if that's allowing enough time but that's just my jaundiced view of Houston traffic. Good luck to your son in his interview and hope he enjoys seeing his buddies in Aggie-land.

You can check this site for construction -- it is also updated (sort of) in real time - it has saved me from heading right into a traffic jam many times - I always check it before I leave for a trip across / around Houston.

    http://traffic.houstontranstar.org/layers/

I was going between Houston & College Station a lot -daughter is an Aggie . Took the route given many times -

Assume he leaves Galveston around 4:00 PM he will be at Beltway 8 in about an hour - just in time for bumper to bumper traffic. The first ~60 miles on beltway 8 & 290 will suck this time of the day - once he gets past the Outlet mall traffic will clear up and it should be smooth sailing -

IMHO - this time of the year (classes just starting at A&M) Highway 6 is a speed trap - lots of hills and curves for the cops to hide. I lost count at the number of cars that flew past me on highway 6 - only to be passed by me a short time later because they were getting a ticket.

That link is awesome. It will be a part of my life before/during every Houston trip from now on - thanks.

Extra advice about Hwy 6 etc. much appreciated as well.
